EDUCATION/JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree, HND, HNC or other similar quality formal education.
  • Must have experience in a transmission related telecommunications field.
  • Well versed in Microwave link planning and Design
  • Experience in designing different transmission network topologies, and experience on IP Based (Cisco) devices will be preferable.
  • Must have specific demonstrable experience on Access and Core telecom / mobile networks, but also be experienced in supporting operations and general engineering responsibilities.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of optical (DWDM, Dark fibre), fibre connectivity, BT MEAS/EAD products, IPVPN, SDH and microwave systems preferably with a Service provider, MNO or a leading vendor.
  • Strong knowledge of communications infrastructure, data centres, exchanges and wiring practices.
  • Experience in Design and testing activities
  • Experienced of working with layer 2 and layer 3 routing protocols, QOS design, Transport aggregation, packet based networks, multiplexing and other related transmission techniques, E2E transport connectivity.
  • Understanding of network and element management systems and north Bound interfaces.
  • Strong knowledge of packet based transmission networks.
  • In depth knowledge of transmission network equipment and techniques.
  • In depth knowledge of mobile network design.
  • In depth knowledge and experience of fault investigation and rectification gained in an operational environment.

Responsibilities:

The initial purpose of this role is to support a nationwide Access and Core network migration to IP network and in some cases IP emulated TDM operation. The network migration will be conducted on a regional basis, with regions being migrated sequentially.
The post holder will have responsibility for coming up with new solutions, detailed network design aspects, for managing the actual circuit migration and testing at a technical level and for providing technical support to others involved in the detailed migration activity.
Providing a source of expertise within Motorola for all technical and engineering matters relating to the new Access and core transmission network architecture and to the migration to that new architecture
The review and monitoring of suppliers’ design, implementation and test activities, to ensure the smoothest workflow and the most cost-effective solution conforming to agreed requirements.
The supervision of commissioning and acceptance testing of the network solution to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
Over time, the post holder will also become involved in other aspects of work in the Transmission section. Typically, this would include involvement in microwave and radio site related issues and projects, involvement in development of the core network, in customer control rooms’ issues and in VSAT related issues.
No direct line responsibility for staff, however this role has to lead teams of staff to ensure successful commissioning and testing of migrated circuits.
Peers with PM staff, with the Managers of the staff who are carrying out the commissioning and testing work as well as with external suppliers/contractors.
The use of problem solving abilities to overcome technical problems and the use of innovative and creative thinking to generate and implement solutions for improving the reliability and resilience of the new core transmission network.
The post holder will liaise with Motorola / Airwave customers. For this reason, not only is a high level of technical competence required but also the ability to communicate with people at all levels.
Suppliers: The post holder will regularly meet with Motorola / Airwave’s suppliers and the suppliers approved contractors. This supplier liaison requires comprehensive specialist technical knowledge but also the ability to understand the commercial relationship with the supplier and to be able to communicate appropriately within this framework.
