We are looking for a motivated and compassionate individual to join the Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) team! Not sure if you’re 100% qualified? We encourage you to apply anyway!
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree, Certificate, or Diploma in social work, child or youth care, counselling or social science and/or a combination of relevant experience and course work.
- Two to three years of experience working with children and youth populations
- Demonstrated experience working with students and families in a K-12 or any educational setting in B.C., and cross-cultural competency and understanding of child development and youth issues.
- Combination of training and related work experience working with newcomers from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Knowledge of the Canadian school system, and awareness of immigrant and refugee settlement challenges to assist newcomer parents and students in transitioning into new communities and schools.
- Working knowledge of existing community resources and agencies for newcomers in the lower mainland
- Knowledge of MS Office applications, publishing software, databases, and social media
- English communication skills verbal and written
- Ability to speak Spanish as a secondary language is required
- Workshop and facilitation skills
- Attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and time management and organizational skills,
- Ability to apply sound judgement in decision-making
- Valid and satisfactory vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check
- Empathetic, respectful, discrete; tactful, patient, and diplomatic
- Current first aid certification or be willing to obtain one
- Access to and use of a vehicle is an asset
Responsibilities:
- Be familiar with MOSAIC’s vision, mission, strategic plan, and integrated client service delivery approach and remain current with CARF standards and practices.
- Connect with Spanish-speaking newcomer students of all ages to mentor and engage them in participation in activities and sports both during and after school hours.
- Plan, develop, and facilitate group activities and presentations in schools during school hours, after school, or on weekends as needed.
- Collaborate with other SWIS staff to facilitate communication between school personnel and parents regarding students’ settlement and adjustment progress
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation, submit monthly reports identifying the successes and challenges of the program electronically and in a paper format
- Accompany students or parents in cultural and community activities and field trips
- Develop and implement engagement activities that encourage self-exploration, leadership skills development, and independent goal-setting
