Description:

The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) is a 34,000-acre facility located near Clay Center, NE. The work performed at USMARC supports research that is focused on solving high priority problems for the U.S. beef, sheep, and swine industries. The sheep unit averages approximately 2,900 total head at any given time with approximately 350 lambs through the nursery each year.

As the Sheep Nursery and Data Associate, you will:

  • Have primary responsibility for the lamb nursery including performing daily checks of all lambs for health concerns, teaching lambs to feed from automatic feeders, and maintaining sanitation of nursery unit.
  • Collect, record, and organize data on individual and groups of sheep. Identify and correct anomalies in the data. Compile data for faculty researchers.
  • Train new staff and student interns on general sheep husbandry and data collection skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and indicated by the needs of the animals and/or unit.

This position may require irregular hours and work in inclement weather. Due to the size of the facility and need to travel between areas, a valid driver’s license and ability to meet University driver eligibility is required. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as an Ag Research Technician II.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus four years of experience with care and management of sheep;OR
  • Associate degree in agriculture, livestock management, or related field plus two years of experience. Additional years of relevant education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience with all facets of sheep husbandry, including but not limited to: AI, palpation, morbidity ID, lambing, and nutrition.
  • Intermediate level computer skills to collect, organize, and maintain data.
  • Must be able to operate and maintain livestock equipment and facilities.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, due to the essential functions of the position.
