Description:

The Calgary Food Bank is the first line of emergency food support for families and individuals facing crisis. As the city’s main charitable food hub and the most accessible food bank, we have the capacity to serve families, individuals, and organizations to fight hunger. Last year (September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023), we raised $20.3 million in funds and $41.9 million in food donations to support our services and programs as we work towards our vision of a hunger-free community.
We are currently recruiting a community-minded individual to join our Logistics and Inventory department as a Shift Supervisor. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for the overall Logistics and Inventory department during their shift.

DECISION MAKING AND LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES:

  • Must be able to make appropriate decisions in a fast-paced environment, work with little supervision, and have the flexibility required to carry out the tasks required.
  • Provides leadership, training, and supervision to volunteers and fine options, providing support and encouragement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • 3-5 years previous experience in a warehouse environment
  • Previous experience in a supervisory capacity
  • Experience with power equipment

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Strong inter-personal skills, able to communicate clearly
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and good organizational skills.
  • Must enjoy working with a wide variety of people
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office including Office 365 and SharePoint

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Working conditions are normal for a warehouse environment. Must be able to be on feet for extended periods of time, and be able lift and carry items up to 50 lbs. This is a full-time, 37.5 hour per week, 5 days a week, 7.5 hours a day position. Hours of work may vary from time to time according to the food bank’s needs, including evenings and weekends. Hours worked beyond the regular work week must be pre-approved will be earned and taken as lieu time.

Responsibilities:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supporting Distribution, ensure the hamper holding area is stocked as required. Work with inventory coordinator and distribution staff to ensure distribution is stocked with quality and variety of products. Review Distribution quality measure weekly.
  • Support and maintain the operations of the warehouse through the receiving, shipping, and handling of goods.
  • Oversight of all department activities after the departure of the dock and production supervisor.
  • Assigning priorities to volunteers on the evening shift, including allocation of volunteers to distribution, fresh food, production and other shifts.
  • Conduct Health and Safety orientations for volunteers as required, specific to the hazards in the areas where volunteers will be working.
  • Assisting with oversight of the Production, Dock, or Distribution areas, as required.
  • Training and supervision of volunteers, ensuring they follow all health and safety procedures. Ensuring volunteers have appropriate work and are instructed in completion of that work.
  • Ensuring hampers are created and organized for the next day’s depot pick-ups - both dry goods and perishable goods.
  • Supporting all evening shift staff (warehouse and drivers) and volunteers ensuring the efficient use of volunteers as required in all areas of Logistics and Inventory and Distribution.
  • Ensure safe food handling procedures are followed.
  • Safe and proper use of equipment.
  • Participate in ensuring ongoing cleanliness of the CFB facility.

TASKS PERFORMED:

  • Assigning staff to complete required tasks.
  • Proper recording of all incoming donations during shift.
  • Loading and unloading trucks, as required.
  • Monitoring incoming product and identifying possible substitutions for guaranteed content.
  • Proper tracking of pallet movement.
  • Racking inventory, as required.
  • Evening cooler rotation, specifically for guaranteed content.
  • Liaise with Volunteer Resources to ensure appropriate volunteer requirements.
  • Waste disposal, composting and cardboard compacting.
  • Fire Marshall on shift, if required.
  • Ensuring all boxes leaving the building are in good condition.
  • Securing and alarming the building at the end of the shift.
  • Communicate with all stakeholders in regard to the specified shift.
  • Performing other duties as required by the department manager.

AS A SUPERVISOR YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Organizing and prioritizing work requirements for staff, ensuring tasks and duties are delegated appropriately.
  • Interpreting and ensuring that you and the team are in compliance with CIFB’s policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring applicable administration and supervisory functions defined in the CIFB People policies are completed. For example, performance evaluations, job descriptions and management of EZ labor.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders and the management team in support of effective people management, needs assessments, orientation, and follow-through.
  • Managing performance related issues and liaising with management team members for support when required.
  • Assisting your team towards personal training and development goals.
  • Upholding policy and contributing to the Health and Safety of all persons accessing and working at the CIFB.
  • Entering and verifying payroll on a bi-weekly basis, if required.
