Description:

QUALIFICAITONS

Experience: 7 years of experience working on mechanical systems, including steam, refrigeration, and systems controls in an institutional, heavy industrial or light commercial environment. Experience in more than one discipline is desirable, but not required.
Education/Licensing: High school education required. Accredited vocational training in a mechanical field or completed apprenticeship working with mechanical equipment, systems, maintenance repairs and or replacement. Must have formal training in two of the four disciplines (HVAC, steam, refrigeration, controls). Third class Stationary Engineer’s license is desirable, but not required. A valid driver’s license free of significant violations is required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Must be proficient with multiple building automation systems (i.e. Trane Tracer Summit, Invensys, Seamans, and JCI Metasys).
Familiarity with the proper use of basic hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment.
Must be able to work well both independently and as a member of a team.
Must be familiar with hazards typical to the institution (radioactivity, asbestos, chemicals, etc.) and related safety equipment and procedures. Training will be provided.
Must be able to read technical diagrams but must also be sufficiently familiar with systems and equipment to diagnose problems without prints.
Technical proficiency in diagnosing and maintaining mechanical systems, equipment and controls is essential. Must be able to identify and repair problems without supervision.
Basic computer skills: must be willing to learn Work Management System software to record work performed in the Zone.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recognize the need for and perform maintenance and repairs on all types of mechanical equipment, including compressors, refrigeration systems, fans, motors, emergency generators, etc. (30%)
Independently diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctioning mechanical systems, controls, and equipment, which may be in confined space or restricted access laboratories. Labs are cleared before entry but will still require proper PPE to be worn as a precautionary measure. (30%)
Repair, re-commission and/or replace equipment associated with steam generating and distribution (boilers, pumps, and lines), systems controls (electronic and pneumatic), emergency generators and transfer equipment, air conditioning (cooling towers, chillers, and fans), computerized energy management and other systems as directed. (20%)
Inspect and log the operation of campus mechanical systems; accurately maintain associated records. Manage and direct workload independently and be diligent in documenting actions and recording proper information into the workorder system (e.g., locations, hours worked, billable account numbers, contact names and numbers, etc.) for use by the management team. Be available to work in other Zones when needed for any task not necessarily trade oriented (10%)
Transport and install equipment necessary for HVAC work throughout the university area other non-related duties. (7%)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.
