Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs legislative and consultative work, serving as a liaison between a state agency and governmental and legislative entities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Government Relations Specialist I - Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in a field relevant to the assignment and two years experience working with the legislature
  • Government Relations Specialist II - Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in a field relevant to the assignment and more than two years experience working with the legislature
  • Experience working with the state legislature, the U.S. Congress, legislative staff, or research services.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four or more years of experience with the Texas state legislative process, including work for state legislators, governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the house, or governmental agencies in performing legislative work.
  • Strong knowledge of Texas’ legislative process, including the appropriations process.
  • Advanced degree in public affairs, public administration, law or related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of state and federal legislative processes and state government administration.
  • Skill in compiling, evaluating and presenting legislative information; in problem solving and negotiating; in policy analysis and research; and in the use of a computer and applicable software.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication, with sound judgment in the release of information.
  • Skill in effectively communicating agency policies and procedures to elected officials, staff, and other state agency personnel in a prompt and professional manner.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of agency programs, policies, objectives, technology, terminology, and research methods.
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment.
  • Ability to analyze issues, to work under pressure and meet close deadlines, and to communicate effectively.
