Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft’s cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. The Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team creates innovative platforms and solutions at planet scale, including Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), custom computing and AI accelerators, and storage and network accelerators.
We are looking for a Software Development Engineer II to join the CAASE development team. You will develop tools and system services that monitor and manage our custom hardware accelerators in the Azure fleet. You will help enable specialized acceleration and customized offloading hardware in our servers in partnership with multiple teams across Microsoft. The software components you deliver include system software and cloud services that monitor, deploy and maintain cutting edge acceleration hardware in the Azure fleet at massive scale. This will involve running high-scale services with an always secure and livesite-first mindset.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years of experience developing production software in C or C++
  • 2+ years of experience in systems and user-mode hardware programming with Windows and/or Linux systems
  • 2+ years of experience with system server architecture, including PCIe devices and PCIe bus

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with programming in languages other than C/C++ such as Rust, Python, C#
  • Experience developing device drivers and/or device software for Windows or Linux
  • Experience with cloud-scale telemetry and monitoring systems
  • Understanding interaction of system software, hardware architecture and protocols
  • Experience developing software for PCIe devices or familiarity with PCIe protocol and standards
  • Familiarity with software engineering tools such as Git, Visual Studio, and kernel debuggers
    Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop libraries, CLI tools and system services to monitor & manage CAASE’s custom accelerators, for both Windows and Linux
  • Rapid cloud scale deployment of software, monitoring of telemetry
  • Design, develop and operate large scale, efficient and reliable cloud services
  • Support our customers by debugging complex multisystem problems, implementing and deploying solutions
  • Work on complex, mission critical solutions that involve multiple Azure Services and a high degree of collaboration
  • Participate in on-call coverage rotation, troubleshoot application issue and apply mitigations
  • Drive continuous improvement on service quality and efficiency
