PRIMARY DETAIL

  • Salary Package: from $119,056 to $132,475 per annum (HEW Level 8), plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Appointment Type: 2 year fixed-term contract, with a possibility for extension subject to funding
  • Location: Macquarie University Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde
    Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO) is seeking an experienced software project manager to oversee, provide expert direction, and drive the delivery of complex software and data projects within the Research Data & Software (RDS) section of our department. Our team delivers initiatives and projects in the focus areas of instrument control, data and workflow management, data processing and analysis, web development, and mobile applications. The Software Project Manager is an important role within the team, and will have oversight of the technical and budgetary success of projects in partnership with RDS leadership.

Reporting to the Heads of Research Data & Software, you will:

  • Monitor, track and document progress of projects against milestones and budgets, and prepare progress reports for senior management and stakeholders;
  • Develop software and data project plans, schedules, materials and labour budgets for proposals, grant submissions, and internal project planning;
  • Consult with the Heads of Research Data and Software regarding resource allocation requests, and direct staff to conduct project related tasks within the confines of the project resource allocation;
  • Liaise with key stakeholders, including University research offices and funding agencies to facilitate project setup, advancement, and delivery;
  • Identify potential risks or challenges and leverage expertise to apply and test solutions to actively address and mitigate risks;
  • Employ agile software development methodologies where appropriate, including daily standups, sprints, time-boxing, project kickoffs and retrospectives;

You are a team player with a collaborative and growth mindset. You have excellent communication and collaboration skills, coupled with strong organisational and technical skills. You will possess substantial knowledge of all aspects of the software development lifecycle and will have successfully managed a range of software projects through to delivery. You will have extensive experience in agile methodologies and in collaborating in a matrix cross-functional environment, to deliver quality project outcomes. You will be comfortable communicating the logic behind technical and project decisions to non-specialist audiences, manage roadblocks, and facilitate the development of creative solutions to deliver technical requirements to scope and budget.

Within AAO, the Research Data and Software (RDS) team delivers initiatives and projects in the focus areas of instrument control, web development, data and workflow management, data reduction and analysis, and mobile applications. The Software Project Manager is an important role within the team and applies their expertise in multiple focus areas to projects, coordinating resources with RDS management, driving collaboration across the organisation and providing mentorship to team members.

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma, or higher, in software engineering, computer science, astronomy, physics or a related discipline;
  • Extensive experience providing project management expertise to technical projects to solve complex technical and/or engineering problems;
  • Sound working knowledge of agile project management methodologies, principles and practices in the context of delivering software projects;
  • Excellent collaboration skills, including the ability to develop and maintain relationships with team members and a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver effective project outcomes
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and in writing, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts effectively to a non-expert audience
  • Strong organisational and time management skills including the ability to prioritise your workload to meet deadlines and work objectives;
  • Experience in resource planning, across a suite of projects;

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a Tertiary Education organisation and an understanding of the operating environment.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and innovation and keeping current with issues affecting the industry and its technologies.
