ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The SOAS Library is one of the world’s most important academic libraries for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The Library attracts scholars from all over the world to consult its holdings and further their research. The Library houses over 1.3 million volumes at the SOAS campus at Russell Square in central London, together with a major collection of archives, manuscripts, rare books, an expanding Digital Library, 500 art objects and a growing network of electronic resources.
Special Collections is responsible for the management of the Library’s archive, manuscript, and rare book holdings. This includes acquiring, cataloguing, and preserving the collections. The Special Collections team also manages a service point providing access to the collections. Special Collections works closely with other teams in SOAS Library, including Collection Care and Digitisation, Access & Discovery and Reader Services, as well as colleagues across SOAS.
About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the post holder will coordinate the services provided by the Special Collections team and will be involved in the management of SOAS Library’s archive, manuscript and rare book collections. The role will be engaged in the effective delivery of services to Special Collections users, including contributing to the reading room service through supervising users, retrieving and reshelving items, responding to enquiries and assisting with reprographics requests. The post-holder will assist with promoting the collections, including social media programmes and displays. The post-holder will contribute to the administration of the section, including such functions as capturing metrics and processing purchase orders and invoices.
