POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Associate Athletic Director, Aztec Club , the Special Events Coordinator provides support to the Athletic Department by planning and coordinating annual fundraising activities and special events to foster giving relationships with current and prospective Aztec donors and the San Diego community. Events include: Mission Valley Stadium events and receptions, game-day hospitality events for football and men’s basketball, select sport specific fundraising activities and events, Football Kick-off Reception, select football and men’s basketball road trips and hospitality events, Director’s Cabinet events, Football & Basketball banquets, and Aztec Club related receptions, luncheons, and social events.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on June 30, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University. Currently, there are 18 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department. The offices include the following: The Aztec Club/Development, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, Communications, External Corporate Sales, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.
These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel and participate in athletic activities and events as they relate to fundraising and development.
  • Special Event coordination experience, preferably in an Athletics environment.
  • Experience in training and leading student workers.
  • Ability to gain knowledge regarding NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of budget policies and procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, and internet navigation.
  • Experience with Advance and Ticketmaster or similar software for ticketing and fundraising preferred.
