Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and well-motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Immunology Department at St Peter’s Hospital.
Primarily with an Immunology background you will be expected to work collaboratively in an Immunology team.
Applications are welcome from HCPC Registered Biomedical scientists with experience working in Immunology but may consider applications from the Biochemistry specialty if you have experience in protein electrophoresis.
We will consider recruiting a state registered band 5 if no suitable Band 6 applicants are successful. If appointed as a band 5 BMS, you would be expected to complete your specialist portfolio in clinical immunology within the first 2 years.

Once trained and competency is achieved the successful post holder will work in rotation with other staff in all sections of the laboratory, namely autoimmune serology, allergy, protein electrophoresis and cellular. The laboratory is well equipped with automated ELISA processors (DS2), two Optilites, two Immunocap250s, a Phadia 2500, two automated slide processors (Quantalyser 240, soon moving to the Aesku Helios analysers), Aquios flow cytometer and the Sebia protein systems (Capillarys and Hydrasis, however this will be shortly moving to the Helena system). Experience with some of these machines would be an advantage. We are currently in the process of moving to an automated Abbott track.
The Immunology Department, Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) are a busy diagnostic service, handling over 300,000 samples a year at our laboratory based on the St Peter’s Hospital site in Chertsey.
Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) is a successful and progressive merged pathology network which is a contractual joint venture between Ashford & St Peter’s, Frimley Health, Royal Berkshire, Royal Surrey County Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and East Surrey Hospitals Trust. Please refer to attached job description but main responsibilities include:
Perform the initial screening and initiate diagnostic tests producing complex quality diagnostic results in order to aid patient treatment and care.
Use specialist knowledge to read and interpret complex diagnostic results.
Use complex analysers combined with the laboratory information management system (LIMS) in order to deliver the diagnostic Clinical Immunology service to service users.
Use specialist knowledge to deliver a high quality diagnostic service in Immunology
Ensure the Immunology Department continues to produce high quality results as confirmed in UKAS accreditation.
Train, supervise and aid in the development of other BMS staff, trainee BMS and support workers, and direct their duties as requested by senior staff.
Work as part of a team, or independently, producing accurate diagnostic results.
Work across all areas of the specialism as required. To fully participate in all aspects of the service including both the routine and non-core working as appropriate.
Using judgement, specialist knowledge and departmental guidelines to authorise diagnostic results and report them. To refer to more senior Scientific/ Medical staff as required. This data may be produced by others in the department.
Ensure that results and reports are produced in a timely manner particularly where these results will have an immediate impact on patient care such as an OPD clinic or A&E, thus contributing to meeting both departmental and Trust turnaround times.
Participate in Departmental internal and external Quality Assurance schemes
Comply with the Trust’s Health and Safety, Security, Risk and COSHH Policies
