Description:

This is a great opportunity for an experienced band 6 Biomedical Scientist to further develop their skills and knowledge in clinical biochemistry.
The role is for a fixed term of 12 months and the successful candidate will gain a wealth of experience.
At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. The Hub opened in April 2024, the job you are applying for will be based at one or more of our hospital sites.
We are looking to recruit a motivated and progressive Band 6 BMS to participate in our 24/7 shift pattern as the hospital sites undergo transformation to essential services laboratories (ESLs).
The post holder is responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose biochemistry service analysing and reporting on blood, urine and other body materials to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care and effective resource management within the hospital. The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any of the sections of the Chemistry department.
The laboratories are based on two sites, St. Thomas’ Hospital (STH) and Guy’s Hospital (GH) both of which have very diverse cultures. There is a wide breadth of clinical specialties associated with these prestigious teaching hospitals including a separate children’s hospital on site at STH, The Evelina.
The laboratories at Guy’s and St Thomas’ are UKAS accredited and are equipped with Abbott Alinity chemistry instruments producing a wide range of assays. There are also a small number of Roche analysers situated in the St Thomas’ laboratory and within diabetic clinics on each site.
Synnovis is a pathology partnership between SYNLAB UK and Ireland, and the NHS, including sites, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to deliver and transform pathology services across South East London.
The partnership provides services to 1.7 million people living in South East London, as well as to hundreds of thousands of patients from outside the region who use local healthcare services.
The partnership provides diagnostics, testing and digital pathology for hospital trusts, GP services and other healthcare providers.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a major emergency and specialist teaching Trust which has all the specialities associated with a fascinating and career-defining caseload, including: Women’s Services, Foetal Medicine, Haematology, Oncology, Transplantation, and is also home to the Evelina Children’s Hospital and the Cancer Centre on Guy’s site.

Your development and learning
You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund which you can receive funding/support for advanced qualifications.
You will hold a variety of accountabilities in the laboratory environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform and interpret routine and specialist biomedical investigations by participating in regular daily workloads, as directed by management, in line with your skills, experience and competencies.
  • Maintain standards of conduct required by the HCPC to practice as a registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Provide technical advice to clinical colleagues as required and within limits of competency.
  • Process specimens and handle sensitive information with care and du diligence, such as patient results, in line with local SOPs.
  • Propose and implement changes to SOPs, policies and work practice as required.
  • Participate in development of new tests, as directed, including alignment with accreditation bodies and local management processes. Where necessary this will include analysing clinical trial samples.
  • Participate in verification and validation work when required.
  • Day to day supervision of MLAs, APs and BMSs, providing support, training and mentoring to ensure performance is in line with laboratory standards.
  • Observe all safety regulations and ensure others are doing the same. This includes holding people to account when standards fall short of expectations and raising concerns about safety in the laboratory.
