Description:

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust welcomes applications for a full-time band 6 Specialist Orthoptist. The post holder will work in central London at the Western Eye Hospital, Marylebone; St Marys Hospital, Paddington; and Charing Cross Hospital Hammersmith. The successful applicant will work as part of the team receiving direct referrals from 24 hours ophthalmic accident and emergency, GPs, neurologists and paediatricians; an orthoptic led fast track clinic receives school nurse and health visitor referrals. All staff take part in training ophthalmologists, optometrists and medical students from Imperial University and school vision screeners in the community. The department is an orthoptic undergraduate clinical placement receiving students throughout the year.
A comprehensive ophthalmology service is provided within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust by Ophthalmologists with general and speciality clinics including Paediatrics and Neuro-motility as well as Diabetic, AMD, Glaucoma, Medical Retinal, Oculo plastics, Cornea and Genetics. Patients are also referred from the trauma unit, general accident and emergency, inpatients wards including the stroke unit, paediatric intensive care and specialist consultants at St. Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals. This provides a challenging and interesting case mix.
To work within the Orthoptic team, operating as an autonomous practitioner to diagnose and manage patients referred to the Orthoptic, Low Vision, and visual fields service.
The post holder will work within a team with 4 Orthoptists, 3 paediatric optometrists, imaging team and liaise with medical trainees, nursing and administrative staff; managed by the Lead Orthoptist and clinically responsible to the Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology. Key ophthalmologists in the team will be the paediatric ophthalmologists, neuro-ophthalmologists and strabismologists.
To diagnose and manage patients of all ages with ocular motility disorders with your own case load as an autonomous practitioner. To provide advice to patients within the Low Vision clinic. To carry out visual field analysis of neurological patients, and liaise with neurologists and ward staff. To provide instruction and teaching to other health professionals, health visitors and school nurses, medical students, GPs, optometry students and undergraduate Orthoptic students.
