WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

  • CPA designation or equivalent is preferred

  • Master’s degree in US tax or equivalent is preferred
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of relevant tax experience, preferably in a U.S. corporate tax environment or public accounting firm
  • Extensive experience with U.S. federal, state, and local tax compliance and reporting
  • Proven track record of successful tax planning and advisory work
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. tax laws and regulations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in tax software and Microsoft Office applications
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Tax, you will play a pivotal role in leading and advising on US tax matters, ensuring compliance with tax regulations, and optimizing tax strategies to support TransAlta’s business objectives. This role requires a deep understanding of US tax laws, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across various departments. This role is based out of our new Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. To ensure that we find optimal talent, we are open to the role being Remote for candidates outside of Alberta, or for those living outside Calgary & surrounding area (ex: Edmonton).

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Manage, including preparation and review, the filing of U.S. federal, applicable state, and local tax returns, including cross border tax compliance filings (Form 5471, 5472 and 8858)
  • Preparation and review of the U.S. tax provisions and analysis under IFRS for financial reporting purposes. This includes deferred taxes, uncertain tax provisions, valuation allowances and financial statement tax note disclosure such as income tax rate reconciliation under IAS 12
  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax positions
  • Provide U.S. tax advice and support with business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings and domestic or cross-border financing
  • Monitor and analyze changes in tax legislation and assess the potential impact on the company
  • Manage and coordinate tax audits and inquiries by federal, state, and local tax authorities
  • Prepare and present responses to tax notices and audit findings
  • Work closely with the Finance, Legal, and Business Development teams to provide tax insights and support on various projects and initiatives
  • Assist is U.S. tax forecasting and modeling of cash tax horizon
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal tax policies and procedures
  • Provide training and guidance to junior tax staff and other departments on U.S. tax-related matters
  • Experience with Advance Pricing Arrangements and Tax Equity Partnership Financing considered a plus
