Description:

The post holder will work under the clinical direction of all the consultants in the haematology department with clearly identified clinical and educational supervisors. The post would be ideal for those wishing to pursue a career as a consultant in Haematology. As such the post is suitable for experienced Registrars who wish to pursue a career in Haematology and who would like to consolidate their experience.
This a whole-time post, working 10 programmed activities per week, with no on-call commitment. The post holder will work as part of the Haematology multi-disciplinary team, and the bulk of the commitment will be to the Haematology out-patients in clinic. There will be some requirement to support the Haematology ward and patients undergoing chemotherapy for both haematological malignancies and solid tumours on the Chemotherapy Day Unit.
The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilize appropriately the available senior staff for advice.
The post holder will be expected to review patients undergoing SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) for haematological malignancies and prescribe treatments according to policy and protocol. They will be a core member of the Haematology MDT and attend the weekly meetings of this group. The post holder will be expected to also see certain new patients according to their ability and scope of confidence, seeking advice and support from senior colleagues.
There is a requirement for the post-holder to undertake bone marrow biopsy and trephine as part of a dedicated clinic for these procedures’ alternate weeks. This clinic takes place at Crawley Hospital. There may be a requirement for the post-holder to undertake such procedures for in-patients.GPs will seek the advice of the Haematology Team via the electronic ‘Advice and Guidance’ system. The post-holder will be expected to reply to these requests for one session per week, answering approximately 20-25 per session.

We provide emergency and non-emergency services to the residents of East Surrey, North-East West Sussex, and South Croydon, including the major towns of Crawley, Horsham, Reigate and Redhill; a community of over 535,000 people. We provide acute and complex services and a range of outpatient, diagnostic services whilst Crawley Hospital and Horsham in West Sussex and Caterham Dene Hospital and Oxted Health Centre in Surrey provide less complex planned services. An indicative timetable follows to provide scheduling details of the clinical and supporting activities that occur at regular times during each week. Agreement should be reached between the appointee, Consultant Haematology colleagues and the Clinical Lead with regard to both the timetable and scheduling of all other activities.
The appointee will be responsible for both malignant and non-malignant patients,
During periods of annual and study leave suitable cross-cover arrangements will be made.
The appointee will be expected to provide mutual cross cover with the post holder’s colleagues during periods of leave and other planned absence.
The post holder will have secretarial support and an office space equipped with computer and microscope. A mentor will be made available to the successful candidate.
The appointee will work as part of a team of six Consultants to provide clinical and laboratory Haematology services to the Trust. The appointee will be expected to have a broad knowledge of Haematology, and there may be opportunities to develop a special interest complementary to the Consultant Haematologists.
The post holder should be experienced in laboratory and clinical Haematology. The ability to work in a team is very important. Enthusiasm and the ability to motivate others are essential.
Any specialist doctor who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Applicants must hold Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
