Job Summary:
The Pension Accounting team is primarily responsible for the execution and accounting of about $3.6 billion in pension benefit payments and $2.8 billion in member contributions per year. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Pension Accounting - Reporting and Analytics, the Senior Analyst, Pension Accounting - Reporting and Analytics is mainly responsible for the first-level review of all month-end and quarter-end reconciliations, attestation, and financial reporting as well as the coordination of financial statement audit-related activities aimed at ensuring fund net asset value accuracy. The Senior Analyst also supports the Senior Manager in various modernization and business intelligence analytics development projects and initiatives.
What you will do:

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Plan and coordinate the month-/quarter-end close process to ensure all pension accounting financial transactions are recorded completely, accurately and on a timely basis. Review and post pension accounting journal entries prepared by the Analyst.
  • Review month-/quarter-end attestation packages and variance analysis for Pension Accounting GL accounts. Review all lead sheets and reconciliations supporting the attestations.
  • Provide quarterly analysis to Controller and Financial Statement Reporting team with variance analysis for Pension Accounting GL accounts.
  • Complete the quarterly net pension cash flow reporting for the Audit and Finance Committee and prepare relevant and succinct commentaries on trend analysis to be reviewed by Senior Manager and Director.
  • Perform first-level review of financial statement note disclosures related to contributions and benefit payments. Lead the team to identify and improve reporting used to monitor the accurate and timely recording of pension transactions.
  • Review reports prepared by the Analyst for the Board of Trustees or required by regulatory entities such as the Ministry of Finance.
  • Review reports prepared by Analyst to support HOOPP legal entity tax compliance and filing requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation of annual employer contribution reports as requested by employers for external audit purposes.
  • Assist management with the implementation of new accounting policies and procedures governing the financial reporting process, as needed.
  • Assist Pension Accounting Operations team in the course of normal operations as their backup

Governance & Controls

  • Coordinate the delivery of materials for controls testing in scope under Internal Controls Over Financial Reporting (ICFR) program, respond to questions from ICFR team and auditors, and escalate any issues as needed.
  • Assist with the organization and delivery of requested information to external auditors and respond to audit inquiries during the annual interim and year-end audits, as delegated.
  • Coordinate between external vendor to obtain SOC report and manage SOC report review process for pension accounting vendors, as delegated.
  • Review and timely update documentations (audit and reporting related desktop procedures, ICFR narratives, finance policies, etc.) prepared by the team for approval by management.
  • Evaluate processes for risk and implement mitigating report-based controls, as needed.

Data Analytics & Business Intelligence

  • Execute and deliver various analytical Business Intelligence reporting and build visualizations in support of operational effectiveness and business decision making.
  • Collaborate with various teams in HOOPP to provide explanation and analysis on the financial impact for material events that may impact HOOPP)
  • Assist Senior Manager with priority data governance and analytics projects and initiatives as needed.
  • Support the continued development and formal documentation of a robust data governance process and procedures internally on pension accounting data.
  • Support the transformation of manual reconciliation into automated, BI tool-based reconciliations for more accurate and timely analytical use.
  • Assist the Senior Manager in the training and education of team members on data management and consumption best practices.

Process Modernization and IT System Maintenance

  • Perform regular maintenance and upgrade testing for all systems relevant for financial reporting and analysis, including but not limited to MS Great Plains and Oracle, as required.
  • Perform regular database and BI tool maintenance tasks.
  • Perform business analysis to assist the implementation of process automations in Pension Accounting using Robotic Process Automation, as needed.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives to increase efficiencies by supporting the prioritization, project management and execution of Pension Accounting modernization initiatives.
  • Assist team leadership in executing management approved steps relating to cheque and paper elimination, as needed.
  • Performing quality check for missing or incorrect data in data warehouse and informing relevant parties about the discrepancies
  • Assisting Business Solution Group (BSG) in Power BI workspace configuration to optimizing report organization

What you bring:

  • University degree in Finance or Business; CPA designation preferred.
  • 5+ years of accounting related experience combined with financial / data analysis and operations experience.
  • Experience with financial analysis, financial reporting and audit facilitation.
  • Experience with large ERP with integrated modules and background data flow.
  • Experience with SQL and other database / BI tools (MS Access, Qlikview, Power BI) as well as Microsoft office products.
  • Demonstrated strong intellectual curiosity, analytical and problem-solving skills with a continuous learning and growth mindset; self-motivated, highly focused, ability to deliver with little to no direction. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written); demonstrated working and relationship building experiences with cross-functional teams.
  • Detail oriented, organized, and thorough at managing assigned tasks and deliverable timelines.
  • Strong ability to effectively collaborate in a hybrid environment.
  • Willing to assume expanded responsibilities as required
