JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Manager, Business Development.
Reporting to the Director, Business Development, this position is responsible in supporting hydro growth initiatives in Northern Ontario. Requires experience leading greenfield projects in Northern Ontario and collaborating successfully with regulators and Indigenous communities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Lead the identification, conceptual development, and definition of hydroelectric development opportunities using effective project management processes and techniques.
  • Lead the integration of the commercial and regulatory aspects of each project, including project costs, revenue mechanisms and financing while ensuring that the risks of each project are understood and managed
  • Direct cross-functional teams involving Stakeholder, Government & Indigenous Relations, Operations, Law, Finance, Commercial Operations, Investment Management, Environment and Project Management
  • Build and maintain key relationships with Indigenous communities, regulators, IESO, Hydro One and other external stakeholders and industry partners throughout the development and project management lifecycle
  • Perform strategic studies of revenue alternatives in relation to OPG business development opportunities.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts associated with Owner’s Engineer type support, external engineering studies, environmental assessment consulting support, project permitting support, etc. for development projects.
  • Lead negotiation of large transactions such as partnership, asset purchases/sales , and complex service agreements.
  • Develop strategic proposals for consideration by senior management and external stakeholders including OWA, IESO and Government.
  • Conduct work in accordance with legal requirements and corporate policy.
  • Manage contracts to ensure work is completed in accordance with H&S, environmental, engineering specifications and quality standards.
  • Manage the conceptual development and definition of projects, including developing potential partnership term sheets and structures for development projects:
  • Negotiate partnership arrangements (with First Nations and other commercial partners) for the purpose of new developments.
  • Develop relationships with First Nations in respect of development projects, including meetings and presentations to chiefs and councils, economic development officers, and other First Nations organizations.
  • Negotiate with counterparties with the objective of agreeing on terms which further OPG’s commercial interests and mitigate risk exposures.
  • Manage transactions with internal and external lawyers, investment bankers, consultants and internal subject matter experts (such as Treasury for Guarantees, project financing, etc.) and integrate their contributions into the undertaking.
  • Interface with internal and external parties in the course of due diligence, face-to-face and written communication.
  • Integrate the commercial aspects of business development projects:
  • Lead project teams for part or all of the full lifecycle of projects, and transition projects to the execution phase where the responsibility rests with others.
  • Monitor the development of power purchase agreements, construction agreements and long term facility operating agreements. Review the integration between agreements and the inherent risks. Recommend corrective actions to achieve appropriate returns to OPG while maintaining acceptable levels of risk.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, political science, public administration, public relations, engineering, science, engineering, or a relevant study combined with experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of progressive experience working with renewable energy projects in the energy or infrastructure sector. Ideally experience leading the development of waterpower / hydroelectric power projects.
  • Experience in establishing credibility, confidence and earning trust. A highly collaborative and effective leader/professional is required for this position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to cultivate, develop and maintain productive working relationships across the business with various stakeholders and right holders.
  • Experience in project management and planning, managing overarching schedules, and implementing multiple simultaneous projects and programs.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; ability to clearly communicate with a wide audience; experience compiling information, preparing, and presenting documentation, presentations, and briefs. Ability to influence and communicate clearly to internal stakeholders such as senior and executive management and externally to the government, public, industry partners, other businesses, and shareholders.
  • A passion for building industry and business interest, meaningful partnerships, participation, or sponsorships.
  • A self-starter who possess a positive attitude and is driven in developing new business, focused on meeting OPG’s strategic objectives, and able to work well within the ambiguity of developing new business operations to achieve success.
  • Knowledge of clean energy, environment policy environments solutions, ideally hydroelectric /waterpower solutions. Strong interest and passion for clean and sustainable energy solutions.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
