ABOUT US
The creation of National Energy System Operator (NESO) is driven by an urgent need to unify and optimise our approach to energy. A more integrated and coordinated strategy is needed to meet the unprecedented challenges of climate change, ensuring secure energy supply, and keeping costs manageable for consumers.
Join us and empower your potential, energise our team, and be part of something bigger.
Your energy, our future, together.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Leading delivery of a robust, transparent and integrated analytical approach for the SSEP, bringing together and appropriately balancing economic, environmental and societal considerations to deliver a spatially optimised future energy plan.
- Leading clear and trusted messaging and engagement with stakeholders on our analytical approach and the results coming from it in a way that non-experts can understand, including the development of appropriate visualisation tools.
- Developing transparent, inclusive and structured ways of working with the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments and Ofgem to ensure they understand and are bought in to our methodology and emerging results, to help secure their endorsement of the SSEP pathway.
- Ensuring our analytical approach is robust, consistent with other plans where possible, complies with the internal and external assurance processes and meets the requirements of relevant statutory processes and the other strategic plans it will feed into.
- Leading development and implementation of the modelling capability for the next and subsequent SSEPs, including analytical tools, data architecture and organisational structure, aiming for a consistent and optimised approach across the organisation.
- Shaping the organisation’s thinking on crucial energy system matters in wider NESO programmes.
- Leading and supporting development and wellbeing of the SSEP analytical team, building a high-performing and collaborative team.
- Being an active and effective member of the SSEP leadership team, working together to achieve a joined-up, high performing SSEP team.
ABOUT YOU
We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has:
- Experience leading delivery of strategic energy system planning.
- The ability to create and communicate a strong vision for the future, to help the first SSEP succeed and set us up for fuller delivery in future versions.
- Proven ability of quality assuring analytical models and outputs, including establishing and demonstrating compliance with robust internal and external assurance processes.
- Strong written, verbal and visual communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate complex information at an appropriate level for the audience
- The ability to see the big picture and think strategically
- Proven ability to build high quality relationships both internally and externally with senior stakeholders and decision makers, building credibility and confidence in the organisation for this new activity.
- The ability to deliver change and mitigate complex risks for the overall benefit of the ESO both internally and with our external stakeholders, in uncertain, politicised and frequently changing environments
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work to tight deadlines and deliver as promised.
- Knowledge of the energy, planning, environment, community etc policies that drive the required considerations in spatial planning.
Responsibilities:
National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
We are seeking an experienced leader with an analytical mindset to have accountability for the modelling that will form the core of GB’s first Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP). You will lead a team of analysts and work closely with government and wider stakeholders to deliver and communicate the SSEP’s integrated modelling. The plan will balance economic, environmental and societal considerations, and other uses of the land and sea, in line with government objectives. The successful candidate will also be the authority on SSEP modelling within NESO, contributing to shaping the organisation’s thinking on crucial energy system matters more broadly.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of GB’s energy system. The first ever SSEP will set out a government-endorsed view of where and when energy generation and storage assets are most optimally located. It will provide greater confidence on the direction of travel for the energy sector, resulting in the acceleration of the roll out of generation and storage assets.
This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick, Glasgow, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
