Description:
At the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of Politics and Society, Aalborg University, two full-time post-doc positions in police accountability are open for appointment from 1 February 2025, or soon thereafter. The position is for one year; a shorter period may be negotiable. The position is within the Variation in Institutional Oversight of Police Misconduct (VINO) research project funded by the European Research Council (2020 – 2026).
JOB DESCRIPTION
The postdoc will contribute to VINO by carrying out independent research in dialogue with the project team. The postdoc is to pursue research on a topic related to the core interests of VINO. The unifying theme for VINO’s research is police oversight and accountability– how states seek to investigate, mitigate, and deter police misconduct through various institutions and process. While VINO’s core focus has been on police oversight bodies, other forms of oversight and constraint are also of interest, for example, legislation, administrative orders, and judicial decisions. VINO is interested in studying how institutions and processes related to police oversight impact on citizen-state relations. The majority of VINO’s work involves theoretically-anchored, empirical analysis using social science methods.
The post-doc is free to define and develop their project idea as it relates to this topic, broadly understood, and will have considerable freedom in shaping how the research objectives are realized. The postdoc is expected to contribute to the shared project through dialogue, presentations, and feedback; to submit manuscripts for publication in international peer-reviewed journals; to present research papers at international workshops and conferences; and to contribute to popular dissemination of the research results. The post-doc will be provided with a budget to support their travel and research.
At AAU, the postdoc will join the interdisciplinary research clusterGlobal Politics and Diversityat the Department of Politics and Society.
