Join our St. Michael’s Home for Children team as a Cook! The Cook prepares and serves food items in accordance with governing standards including but not limited to the City of Houston, ORR, and TDFPS Licensing. Work closely with supervisor to ensure menus are prepared to meet dietary regulations and served as needed. Ensure kitchen operations meet all City/County health and safety requirements. Additionally, Cook is responsible for provide personalized care and services that uphold program policies and procedures in accordance with licensure, ensuring childrens rights to a safe, culturally sensitive and age-appropriate environment is in place.

TheExpertiseWe’re Looking For

  • You have a High School Diploma or GED
  • You have three (3) or more years of experienceworking in a restaurant industry setting.
  • You have the Food service manager/handler’s certification or must obtain within 90 days of employment
  • You are Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • You demonstrate knowledge and understanding of professional boundaries with children in care, staff and volunteers.

What you Deliver

  • You will prepare and serve meals in accordance with all safe, sanitary, and food-handling practices. Season and cook food according to dietary restrictions identified by appropriate medical personnel and/or Shift Leader, dietician, and recipes. May include weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients using various kitchen utensils and equipment. Observe and test meals to determine if they have been cooked sufficiently using appropriate means and/or tools. Regulate temperatures of ovens, deep fryers, and grills to achieve sufficient temperature for cooking food. Work with SMHC direct care staff to estimate expected food consumption; submit weekly food and kitchen supply orders, receive deliveries, store supplies, and assist with maintaining inventory. Ensure food is appropriately stored and maintained that abides by standards and best practices. Assist with food service and clean-up. Maintain cleanliness in all areas of food preparation and service. Keep valid food handlers permit.
  • You will, as needed, during emergencies, crisis, urgent situations, or as a program necessity, assist as Youth Care Worker to maintain ratio. While conducting this role, no cooking/food preparation can occur.
  • You will effectively communicate information pertaining to the clients according to the program policies and procedures to ensure quality services and client safety.
  • You will maintain confidentiality and continue on-going training compliance in accordance with state regulations and both Catholic Charities and St. Michaels Home for Children requirements. Attend all mandatory meetings and required trainings as needed to maintain full agency, funder and licensure compliance. Assist in the distribution of information to other staff regarding trainings, meetings, etc., duty, and/or responsibility.
  • You will perform other duties as required, such as participating in staff retreats, United Way tours, agency and community fairs and speaking engagements. assisting with special organizational projects/events, in order to promote agency programs.
