JOB SUMMARY

The Electrical & Computer Engineering Department is located within the Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University. The department plays a key role in Nova Scotia as a catalyst of research-driven innovation as well as the intellectual and technological growth of the province. Extensive faculty collaborations with other universities, centres of excellence, and industries locally, nationally, and the world over, attest to the strengths of the department. Reporting to the Department Head, Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Staff Engineer will manage all technical activities and technical staff within the departmental teaching laboratories and workshop facilities as well as certain research laboratories, including health and safety of the spaces.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in electrical engineering or other related field plus five to seven years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Professional Engineer designation designation required or be eligible for and committed to registration as a Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia as well as well as a commitment to maintaining this designation including all required annual professional development in addition to other ongoing professional development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and proven success creating and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team building, and communication (oral, written and presentation) skills.
  • Experience in strategic and long-term goal management.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, and the proven ability to balance multiple projects in a fluid, busy work environment.
  • This position requires significant physical effort including regularly lifting up to 40 kg; maintaining and moving equipment; and standing for extended periods.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development and growth of teaching laboratory spaces including strategic planning in conjunction with the Department Head. Identify gaps, issues and opportunities in physical space, equipment, services offered, and service delivery, taking into consideration potential restraints.
  • Serve as Departmental Safety Officer with direct and accountable responsibility for safety within all teaching laboratory spaces. Develop and deliver centralized training for all users of teaching laboratory space and equipment on proper and safe use of same.
  • Serve as department expert regarding electric and mechanical equipment. Direct planned maintenance, upgrading, and repair of electronic and mechanical equipment, including highly specialized equipment.
  • Provide technical and safety expertise to faculty including as they develop teaching laboratory experiments, exercises and tutorials, and updates and maintenance of laboratory manuals.
  • Manage procurement of laboratory materials, supplies, and laboratory kits. This includes investigating, sourcing and recommending alternatives based on improved designs, options, cost, connectivity, etc. Research and advise on new equipment purchases.
  • Manage technical staff including identification of gaps in staffing; recruitment; resolution of staff concerns and issues; and supporting staff skill growth and career progression by identifying and implementing project and learning opportunities for interested staff.
