About the opportunity:
SWCA is looking for an Assistant Staff Archaeologist to Staff Archaeologist based out of our Denver office to assist with a variety of projects across the western US. Projects will largely include pedestrian survey, tribal survey, micrositing, and possibly shovel testing in Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Oklahoma through November and/or until weather ends project work. This is a temporary, hourly position that will also work with SWCA’s other offices across the country. Pay ranges from $22.05-$28.35/hour for Assistant Staff Level and $24.41-$31.24/hour for Staff Level commensurate with experience and role, with overtime paid at time-and-a-half, $59 per diem, paid sick time accrual, and single occupancy lodging for non-local projects.

Under this requisition, we could hire the following positions:

  • Assistant Staff Archaeologist - Typically with up to one (1) year of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Staff Archaeologist - Typically with up to two (2) years of relevant experience and expertise.

What you will accomplish:

  • Perform archaeological survey, NRHP evaluation, monitoring, data collection, and documentation in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements
  • Perform digital photography, use electronic data-collection tools and GIS mapping applications
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with project personnel
  • Depending on experience, maintain written daily survey, monitoring, or site-recordation logs, and provide daily email updates to project management
  • Depending on experience, assist project managers with preparation of technical reports
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism at all times and during all interactions with project personnel
  • Follow and comply with SWCA and client safety guidelines and requirements
  • Demonstrate and maintain SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance, and have the awareness to identify and resolve challenges in creative ways
  • May lead a crew under the direction of the Field Director
  • Supervise and lead a small crew while conducting archaeological field work such archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery. This includes:
  • independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery;
  • ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely;
  • serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers;
  • receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field; and
  • monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when corrective action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback.

Experience and qualifications for success:

  • A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience is required; field schools focusing on North American archaeological methods and cultural resources management are preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in CRM and a range of field methodologies (survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring) is preferred.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Experience collecting field data using tablets and Esri software is preferred.
  • Technical writing skills, including demonstrated experience preparing technical reports in a CRM context is preferred.
  • Experience in the Rocky Mountain/Plains is preferred.
  • Ability to work with tribal cultural specialists is required; previous experience working with tribal cultural specialists is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate excellent attention to detail and will have strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrate ability to coordinate effectively with SWCA senior staff and other project personnel.
  • Must be motivated and able to work safely and cooperatively with minimal supervision.
  • Availability to work extended field rotations (12 to 14 days at a time) and travel accordingly.
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads are required.
  • Dependable, respectful, organized, proactive, and on-time.

An employee in this Broomfield, CO-based position can expect an hourly rate of $22.05/hour - $28.35/hour for Assistant Staff Level Archaeologist and $24.41/hour - $31.24/hour for Staff Archaeologist. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
