Description:
The post holder is responsible for the assessment, management and care of patients in the Accident and Emergency and General Ophthalmology service. They will assess patients and implement and evaluate
treatment provision ensuring that the care provided is consistent and of a high standard throughout the patient care pathway.
At times they will have management responsibility for the co-ordination of teams within the A&E department and General ophthalmology clinic and the supervision and education of junior members of staff. They will
ensure that all patients are seen and assessed by members of the multidisciplinary team.
The post holder will be a key member of staff, participating in the development of care for patients attending the Accident
and Emergency service. They will work independently/autonomously and are accountable for their own professional actions. They are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, always
ensuring that the care they provide is compassionate and safeguards the dignity and well- being of all patients.
Be accountable for practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and taking every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.
Act in accordance with local, hospital and statutory guidelines and policies including health and safety initiatives.
Compile a personal & professional portfolio in conjunction with the performance management process and the compilation of a Personal Development Plan.
Maintain a high standard of care and remain courteous at all times to all patients, carers, visitors, colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team
Practice in a cost effective and cost aware manner being aware of budgetary constraints and the requirement to manage resources efficiently and effectively.
Take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, service users, visitors and the public, by implementing all policies related to health, safely, security and risk

Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within the A&E service, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions
and evaluations for patients is provided throughout the patient pathway.
Work with all members of the multidisciplinary team to achieve and maintain all targets and measures both local and national that are relevant to the A&E and General Ophthalmology service.
Responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
Act as an advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within relevant guidelines.
Ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
Recognise the significance of observations made, and use them to develop and initiate nursing assessments and management of the patient in the outpatient setting
