About this opportunity:
The Operations Support Team in Canadian Thermal & Conventional Heavy Oil is currently seeking a Staff Process Safety Engineer to join its team based in Lloydminster, Alberta. The successful applicant will serve as an expert on the application of process safety principles in an operating setting. In this role, you will help the Canadian Thermal and Conventional Heavy Oil operations to mature process safety systems and ultimately sustain industry leading performance. The ideal candidate will have outstanding communication skills and work well in a dynamic team environment, providing training and support for process safety work processes and systems used to handle operational risks.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide specialist facilitation, training, and mentoring for Process Hazard Analysis to ensure consistent and effective risk management, including Abnormal Operating Conditions and safety system impairment risk assessments
  • Lead HAZOP/LOPA revalidation programs, handling the planning, scheduling, and review sessions with key collaborators, and resolving HAZOP action items
  • Lead HAZIDs and Bow Ties for Major Accident Hazards, ensuring comprehensive analysis and risk mitigation
  • Conduct assurance and verification activities to measure the effectiveness of process safety systems and support continuous improvement efforts
  • Support Process Safety performance stewardship, including metrics, analysis, interpretation, and action planning for the business unit
  • Lead all aspects of safety-critical Barrier Health reporting, developing performance standards and specifying inspection, testing, and preventative maintenance activities
  • Coordinate Process Safety Event investigations to facilitate learning and risk reduction by collaborating with technical specialists and actively staying updated on industry standard methodologies, practices, codes, and standards.
  • Travel to field operating locations to build effective working relationships with field team members and support on-site risk reduction activities

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Engineering degree, eligible for professional registration with APEGA and APEGS, with 12-18 years of related experience
  • Experienced in the application of risk assessment techniques such as HAZOP, What-if, Bow Ties and LOPA
  • Experienced in process safety work processes, supporting operations, including Management of Change, Pre-Start of Safety Review, Management of Safety Critical Elements, and Learning from Incidents
  • Well-developed organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Consistent track record to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Strong leadership, with people and influencing skills
  • Oil & Gas operations support experience required, with Thermal heavy oil and/or Oil Sands experience being considered an asset

For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver’s abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre-employment screening for the final candidate.
