Description:
Under the general supervision of Core director of the Centralized Lab Support Core facility in the UCLA-Charles Drew University (CDU)-Center For AIDS Research (CFAR), this position entails (70% of time) to support UCLA-CDU investigators for HIV/AIDS research related laboratory assays, cutting-edge technologies, and expertise needed to enable innovative research to stop HIV. In particular, this position will provide vital biologic material (human blood cells, HIV), technical/service support (digital PCR, HIVp24 ELISA) and the management of the core facility. This position also entails (30% of time) to develop stem cell gene therapy strategies for curing HIV/AIDS. The position entails purification of human hematopoietic stem cells, preparation and performance of tissue culture experiments, virus production, gene therapy vector production, maintaining equipment and keeping an updated and accurate notebook record of ongoing experiments. Maintain reagents, laboratory resources and databases, and orders and stock supplies. Molecular biology experiments (DNA, RNA, protein), cell culture, gene therapy vector (lentivirus based) transduction, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and related virus infection and small animal (mouse) work are expected.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of molecular biology, microbiology, tissue culture, gene therapy and mouse experiments. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to maintain proper usage of laboratory equipment. (Required)
- Ability to enter data into computer. Competence in using Microsoft Word and Excel, willing to learn Delta Graph, and flow cytometry data analysis software. (Required)
- Ability to communicate well with faculty, staff, vendors and UCLA departments. (Required)
- Ability to organize time and keep a detailed notebook. (Required)
- Ability to work with mice. (Required)
- Ability to perform surgery on mice. (Preferred)
- Ability to work independently and maintain good working relationships with students, faculty and staff. (Required)
- Ability to use cloning software. (Preferred)
EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & PERSONAL AFFILIATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in biology or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required)
