The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Staff Scientist, Riddell Centre. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Director of the Riddell Centre.
The mission of the Riddell Centre is to reduce the burden of cancer across the lifespan and improve patient survival through the rapid development and implementation of safe and effective immunotherapies. The Discovery and Innovation Program will help the Centre achieve this goal by developing novel immune cell therapeutics in the lab and driving them into early-phase clinical trials.
The Staff Scientist is a position with significant responsibility at intellectual, technical, organizational, educational and management levels. The individual will work with a small team of technicians and be involved in key collaborations within the Riddell Centre, the greater University community, and the wider cell therapy community on a national and international level.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support the Director of the Riddell Centre in running a research program in cell and immune therapeutics of cancer
  • Help make strategic decisions on research prioritization and oversee research projects
  • Help develop grant applications, research manuscripts and patent applications (strategy, writing, figures, submission, etc.)
  • Help develop and manage research collaborations
  • Attend conferences and present research locally, nationally and internationally
  • Co-supervise trainees. Serve on student supervisory and examination committees. Provide day-to-day mentorship in the lab
  • Manage the lab manager and provide oversight over day-to-day operations of the research lab (ordering, finances, inventory management, equipment maintenance and repair, developing SOP, biosafety, chemical inventory, personnel training, etc.)
  • Co-lead lab meetings with the Director
  • Lead the Synthetic Immunology Research Enabler within the Riddell Centre
  • Working closely with the Director, make strategic decisions on projects to support and project to develop internally
  • Through collaboration, provide synthetic immunology (SI) support for projects and investigators within the Riddell Centre (e.g., knowledge, methods, reagents, experiments, data, etc.) and sometimes outside the Centre
  • Drive priority innovation projects forward within the SI Research Enabler
  • Support clinical translation of SI-developed experimental medicines, where needed
  • Oversee, manage and train a small team of scientific and technical staff
  • Provide education in cancer immunology and immunotherapy to students within the Riddell Centre, and beyond
  • Provide cancer immunology and immunotherapy lectures to undergraduate and graduate students in various courses
  • Co-lead the cancer immunology and immunotherapy module within the Charbonneau Institute’s graduate training program
  • Lead the cancer immunology and immunotherapy journal club within the Riddell Centre and Charbonneau Institute
  • General:
  • Serve on local, provincial, national and/or international grant review committees, as needed
  • Serve on Riddell Centre and other CSM committees, where appropriate
  • Actively engage in ongoing professional development and training to stay updated on industry best practices and advances in cancer immunology and immunotherapy research

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • PhD degree in a related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in cancer immunology and immunotherapy research
  • Deep contemporary understanding of principles and practices in cancer, immunology, immunotherapy, synthetic immunology, virology, microbiology, and biochemistry
  • Capacity to exercise expert judgment and decision making to guide research direction and solve highly complex scientific problems
  • Significant prior experience and demonstrated strength in developing and reviewing grant applications, manuscripts and patents in cancer immunology and immunotherapy
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Ability to mentor students, work collaboratively within a large transdisciplinary research environment, and lead a small group of people
  • Experience presenting scientific data at meetings and conferences
  • Technical and theoretical proficiency in laboratory methods and analytical techniques required to conduct cutting-edge cancer immunology and immunotherapy research
  • Ability to help oversee a modern-day biomedical research laboratory
  • Strong project management, organizational and time-management skills
  • Prior experience and demonstrated strength in teaching undergraduate and graduate students in cancer immunology and immunotherapy
  • Prior experience serving on student and university committees
  • Proficient computer skills, particularly in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), with additional proficiency in software for project management, inventory tracking, and data storage
