Description:

What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity?
At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients.
Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.
The Staff Test Platform Engineer, Thermal Systems will be responsible for leading the conception, development, and implementation of thermal test systems enabling the advancement of Illumina’s world leading DNA sequencing technologies for the advancement of research and medical diagnostics.
This role requires development and deployment of a long-term Test Platform Strategy enabling leverage of test investments across the product portfolio and over time in support of Illumina’s product roadmap. The successful candidate also has demonstrated strength in thermal system engineering and testing. This includes defining the requirements such as accuracy, precision, repeatability, and reproducibility of a measurement system. The role involves hands-on design and integration of thermal test systems, therefore a qualified candidate must have strong multi-disciplinary engineering capabilities, including thermal sub-systems, opto-mechanical, fluidic, precision motion and electronics.

Responsibilities:

  • The Test Platform Engineer will be responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing complex Thermal test systems and calibration tools/fixtures utilized across the product lifecycle. These test systems are key to characterizing Illumina’s aggressive product innovations during their development and enable high yield, quality, and reliability in production.
  • Thermal Test systems cover both instrument and consumables and include System thermal (Passive and active Air flow, Coolant systems, modeling etc) and heating/cooling thermal devices like heaters, water baths, Peltier devices etc and thermal control development and optimization
  • This role requires development and execution of a long term Test Platform Strategy to enable leverage of test infrastructure investment across the product portfolio and over time with our product roadmap.
  • The role involves hands-on design, integration, and debugging of thermal test systems, therefore a qualified candidate must have strong multi-disciplinary engineering capability and the passion and ability to climb learning curves when new challenges present themselves.
  • Role requires clear communication and alignment with broad stakeholders. Test Platform documentation deliverables will include Design Requirements, Error Models, Design Files, Risk Assessments, Test Plans, Test Reports.

Required Skills & Experience:
-

Typically requires or equivalent work experience:BSc/MS: 8+ years of experience, PhD: 2-5 years of experience

  • Hands on experience in designing and testing principles of heat transfer, thermal control, air/liquid cooled, thermoelectric, refrigeration technologies and metrology
  • Experience with design and development of complex test systems, including measurement error budgeting, sensor selection, overall system architecture definition, and detailed design.
  • Mechanical engineer design work experience with SolidWorks, thermal modeling with ANSYS, COMSOL and Thermal budgets
  • Ability to write basic scripts for instrument integration and data analysis in tools such as Matlab, Python, JMP etc.
  • Demonstrated track record of rapidly climbing steep learning curves. Enthusiasm for tackling tough problems on aggressive schedules.
  • Strong teamwork, communication and presentation skills (ability to distill complex technical information into actionable technical recommendations)

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Experience with a wide range of thermal sensing technologies including high precision techniques, low cost/high volume techniques, micro-fabrication techniques, design for manufacturing, and design for reliability.
  • Fluency in the thermal control techniques and modelling
  • Understanding of failure data analysis process, and accelerated testing principles.
