SUMMARY

The Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time statistician at the intermediate level. This unique opportunity necessitates application of statistical and epidemiological methods. Under general direction, the statistician will select study samples in large relational databases; analyze and interpret a wide variety of data according to established statistical methods; and prepare reports and tables summarizing results of analyses. This position requires an individual who can work with a high degree of independence within the scope of their responsibilities. The individual will be expected to analyze, compare, and evaluate different courses of action to solve complex analytic and programming problems without immediate supervision. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Master’s Degree in public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics;
  • 1-3 years professional experience
  • Proficiency with SAS, SQL, ArcGIS, and R, as well as a working knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau and Excel;
  • Demonstrated professional, verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to prioritize and organize multiple projects;
  • Ability to independently act as a resource and problem-solver with minimal supervision; and
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Familiarity with population-level databases such as those supporting public health registries, chronic disease management, or health plan administrative claims systems;
  • Knowledge of population health management and public health functions and program objectives.

Responsibilities:

Applicants must have a broad knowledge of statistical, epidemiological, and programming procedures, as the position requires a high degree of independence. Applicants must also have the ability to collaborate with faculty and staff regarding analytic, statistical, programming, or other methodological issues. Responsibilities include:
? Employing epidemiological methods to evaluate associations as well as inferential statistical analyses, including but not limited to regression modeling;
? Using geographic information systems (GIS) tools to conduct geospatial analyses;
? Designing, testing, and debugging SAS programs using PROC SQL to summarize, subset, join (merge), and concatenate large datasets to create analytic datasets;
? Contributing intellectually to the design, programming, analysis, reporting, and dissemination of research projects, potentially as a co-author of abstracts and manuscripts.
