Description:
We are seeking an individual who is inspired by our mission and whose beliefs align with our core values of integrity, compassion, inquiry and courage, and reflects our core competencies to join our Junior School as a STEM Coordinator Grade JK – 6 (LTO). This is a full-time, four (4) month contract position starting in September 2024.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Provide direct support to teachers as they implement the Ministry of Education Science and Technology units of study with an emphasis on developing scientific understandings, knowledge and skills with an inquiry approach;
- Meet regularly with teachers to co-plan science units;
- Act as a resource to teachers in developing unit plans and lessons in science and technology emphasizing the use of observational activities, design challenges, inquiry activities and research projects related to science and technology;
- Supports teachers and acts as a resource to enact observational activities, design challenges, inquiry activities and research projects related to science and technology;
- Support the appropriate application of mathematical concepts in science and technology activities in coordination with the Mathematics coordinator;
- Co-teach science and technology units with teachers when requested;
- Implement appropriate and diverse technologies to help support the science and technology curriculum in coordination with the Junior School Digital Service Manager;
- In consultation with the VP Teaching and Learning, Head of the Junior School and Junior School faculty, determine and implement program changes as deemed necessary to support student engagement and learning;
- Plan and facilitate workshops and/or information events as required;
- Maintain and order appropriate resources to support the science and technology program
- Keep the Junior School STEM space organized and equipped in compliance with Health and Safety regulations;
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Relevant university qualifications (e.g. Bachelor of Education plus Bachelor of Science or equivalent);
- Certification from the Ontario College of Teachers and be a member in “Good Standing”;
- A minimum of five years exemplary teaching experience in an elementary school
- A comprehensive understanding of current educational practices in the areas of curriculum planning and implementation of the most recent Ontario Science curriculum
- A comprehensive understanding of Havergal’s assessment practices in line with Growing Success;
- Knowledge of differing learning needs and strategies for supporting all kinds of learners
- Knowledge of appropriate technology integration into teaching and assessment practices
- Knowledge of the current research on girls and learning
- An ability to work in a collaborative environment;
- Able to work in a self-directed manner appropriate to changing needs
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, time-management and communication skills;
- A commitment toward continued professional development and growth;
- Energy, commitment and a readiness to participate in the co-curricular program
