Description:

NATURE OF THE WORK:

The job of student life counsellor involves more specifically functions of planning, implementing, developing, leading, managing and evaluating activity programs associated with student life, relating to the institutional directions, strategic plan and success plan of the College particularly in the following sectors: sociocultural life, sports and outdoor activities, economic life and community life.
Specifically, the Coordinator of the First People’s Centre will coordinate the First Peoples’ Center (FPC) in collaboration with College resources and support systems. The coordinator plays a leadership role in these matters and in relations with the Dawson community, and advances the Center’s relations with external communities, stakeholders, support systems and partners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization.

Responsibilities:

  • Further establish and strengthen the relationships of the diverse First Peoples students and communities within Dawson College, and engage the larger Dawson community to have a sense of involvement and purpose in this regard;
  • Support Indigenous students’ academic success by developing and administering advising and socio-cultural support systems that promote student engagement, retention, success and graduation;
  • Advise and provide information to Indigenous students;
  • Advise college faculty and staff, concerning matters related to Indigenous students;
  • Develop and manage relevant data and statistics for the center;
  • Assist in the development of long-term policies and strategies involving Indigenous students’ communities (e.g., collaboration with the Dawson First People’s Steering Committee and the Dawson Indigenous Education Council);
  • Plan, organize, and implement a program for educating the larger Dawson community concerning sociocultural and historical matters related to Indigenous students, peoples, communities, and life;
  • Liaise with band councils, government agencies, and internal and external contacts; work closely with academic departments on curriculum issues regarding pedagogy and content; participate in educational activities at Dawson and occasionally outside of Dawson;
  • Prepare case records; compile and interpret statistical information; prepare reports and recommendations;
  • Research, identify, and develop funding proposals from external sources to support long-range strategies;
  • Assist in the development of a program to recruit of Indigenous students; develop budgets, and materials to support this program;
  • Recruit, train, and oversee volunteers;
  • Develop an Elders program and recruit participants;
  • Perform all other related duties.
