Responsibilities:

The biomedical systems department of the IRT is developing soft robots for assistive devices. The actuators will be used primarily in the development of assistive breathing devices. For this reason, multiple different soft actuation methodologies need to be designed and tested. We will employ 3D printing and molding for rapid prototyping, and brainstorm ideas for appropriate experimental setups to assess the behaviour of the actuators. We are looking for a student to assist in the development of these prototypes. The tasks involve:

  • Reviewing existing soft actuator designs from literature.
  • Designing actuators and their corresponding molds for silicone / TPU molding.
  • 3D printing and assembling molds, fabricating the soft actuators from these molds.
  • Brainstorming and fabricating appropriate testing setups to quantify the mechanical behaviour of the prototypes.
