About us
Join us at the department of Sustainable and bio-inspired materials (Director Prof. Dr. Vignolini) at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPICI) in Potsdam Science Park, Germany (hybrid work possible) as a student assistant for optical modelling of light-emitting devices (m/f/d) and contribute to the design of the next generation of photonic devices based on creative, adaptive and sustainable materials.
We are tackling research questions at the interface of chemistry, soft-matter physics, optics, and biology. Our studies focus on how natural materials are assembled into complex architectures within living organisms and how these architectures define their response. We believe that, by understanding the design principles found in nature, it is possible to fabricate a novel class of truly sustainable functional materials.
Your tasks and qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated Student worker (SHK/WHK) with a background in physics, nanoscience, mathematics or in related fields. The candidate should have a profile showing the following qualities:
- M.Sc. or advanced B.Sc. student in physics or related disciplines
- Interest in and familiarity with theoretical descriptions of optical systems
- Completed coursework electromagnetic theory, optics and nanophotonics, or similar
- Ability for both independent and team work
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
- Language skills in English in speech and writing.
Project description
Light emitting devices such as LEDs and lasers are an essential part of modern technology, with applications ranging from quantum computing to biomedicine. However, most of these devices are traditionally not made from ecologically friendly materials. Here, we want to explore biocompatible and self-growing materials for designing creative novel optical devices. Designing such devices requires understanding the optical cavity physics and excited state dynamics of the proposed systems. Your project will combine various methods of optical modelling and analysis to investigate potential device architectures. Involvement with future projects to experimentally realize such devices and characterize their optical properties is also possible.
What we offer
- an interesting and varied job in an international working environment
- involvement with a cutting-edge research project with theoretical and experimental aspects
- support and guidance for starting a career in research or academia
- remuneration of 15.02 €/hour (with completed undergraduate degree, else 14.39 €/hour)
- flexible working hours and hybrid work
- compatibility of family and career (e.g. company Kindergarten)
- canteen, with an offer of meat, vegetarian and vegan dishes
