Description:

EDUCATION:

University degree inclusive of courses in a field related to student development theories, student engagement, leadership studies, adult learning and/or training, or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks, plus relevant specialized education or training. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below. Advanced education at the graduate level and certification, such as Supplemental Instruction (Peer Assisted Study Session), would be an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years recent related work experience developing, implementing and facilitating student-centred programs designed to support student engagement, student leadership and student success in higher education. Advanced knowledge of student development theories specializing in student leadership, engagement and success in higher education. Experience in developing, implementing and coordinating events. Experience in evaluating Student Success programs. Proven experience drafting documents, reports and communications for a variety of audiences. Familiarity with National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and Beginning College (University) Survey of Student Experience (BSSE) would be an asset. Experience in coordinating the work of peer leaders and/or Work/Study students.

Excellent organizational and project management skills to prioritize and work with multiple projects and events occurring within short and overlapping time periods.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, in an environment of high volume and competing priorities.
Ability to adapt to new and emerging technologies.
Strong computer skills including Microsoft 365 such as MS Word, Excel, Access at an intermediate level including demonstrated knowledge of functions/formulae, creating queries and reports, filtering, sorting and linking (mail merge).
Intermediate MS PowerPoint or similar presentation software.
Familiarity with a university student information system (e.g. SIS) will be preferred.
Familiarity with event management software.
Ability to oversee and maintain social media accounts (e.g. blogs, WordPress, Twitter, Facebook). Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse university student population to meet the needs of students.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal courteously, tactfully, and effectively with students, faculty and staff.
Ability to exercise initiative, good judgment, and flexibility in an environment of continuous change and process improvement.
Demonstrated commitment to working as a team player.
Strong ability to handle confidential material.

Responsibilities:

The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LA&PS) is the largest Faculty at York University with over 27,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and almost 100 programs delivered through 24 Departments, Schools and Colleges, plus the IBM Markham Learning Site. Through innovative course design, diverse experiential education and learning opportunities, and a supportive community environment, our students receive the education they need to create big ideas that have an impact on the world.The Student Engagement Coordinator (Coordinator) works with the Associate Dean, Students, LA&PS Colleges Heads and teams to support and champion students and their successes. The Coordinator participates and makes recommendations in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of student success and retention programs. The Coordinator coordinates the integration of programs across the student life-cycle within the LA&PS Colleges (Founders College, McLaughlin College, New College and Vanier College). This includes student transition programs, peer mentorship, student leadership and development, and providing direct student success coaching. The Coordinator collaborates with the LA&PS Colleges team to integrate approaches to student engagement and success programs through all phases, from Recruitment and Conversion, Transition, Academic Orientation, First Year, the Middle Years and to Upper Year. The Coordinator collaborates with campus resources as partners in student success and engagement programs and initiatives. The Coordinator supports the vision, mission, values and strategic direction of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and York University, and understands how their efforts contribute to the goals and objectives of the Colleges/Schools/Departments, the Faculty and the University more broadly. The incumbent will also contribute to a positive, supportive and student-focused team environment of high performance, respect, trust, collaboration and continuous improvement.
