THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION UNTIL MARCH 31, 2025

The Student Laboratory Assistant is a part-time (4-16 hours per week) term position that will aid in the maintenance of the Chemistry department’s chemical Inventory of 4000+ chemicals. The incumbent will be working in the Chemistry department’s main supply and storage room. The job will entail relabeling chemical bottles to meet WHMIS 2015 regulations, entering descriptive information into chemical inventory software, and reorganization of chemical storage cabinets. Other duties as assigned to assist in the cleanliness and safety of the storage areas.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have completed second year of undergraduate studies, declaration of either a Biochemistry or Chemistry as a major.
  • Must be comfortable working with chemicals of varying hazards.
  • Must have strong computer skills, familiarity with Windows and MS Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good organizational skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Relabel (according to WHMIS 2015 spec) and clean chemical storage bottles for use in undergraduate labs and research labs. Inventory may need to be rearranged to meet current curriculum and safety. Direction will be given by Chemistry laboratory technician staff as required.
  • Perform data entry into chemical inventory software or Excel. Information entered will be pertaining to each chemical.
  • Prepare/revise inventory lists for each chemical storage cabinet. (Training provided by technician staff)
  • Compose lists of chemicals requiring disposal and hand off these chemicals to the technician.
  • Other administrative duties (eg. submission of safety forms).
  • Replacement of chemical stock bottles, refilling prepared solutions and solid mixtures into new bottles and vials.
  • Light dusting or wiping down may also be required.
