Student, Petroleum Engineering – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to assist our talented Technical Science and External Innovation branch. As a Student, Petroleum Engineering, you will work with the Engineering team to help understand the impact of reservoir and wellbore design strategies on fluid disposal, specifically in relation to induced seismicity. You will gain insight into disposal design and operations, including maximum injection/reservoir pressure, disposal well completion design, performance/operating principles, and start-up, operating, and suspension procedures.
The objective of this role is to provide a rewarding work experience, while offering technical exposure to aspects of reservoir engineering in disposal wells and the factors that contribute to induced seismicity. By the end of the program, the student will have a solid understanding of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER)’s mandate, how it aligns with the core business, and what it’s like to work as an engineer or technical subject matter expert at the AER.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Build a database from publicly submitted data to identify influencing parameters in induced seismicity, and present correlating variables through a specially designed dashboard.
- Perform data mining and extraction, manipulate data, and use data analytics tools to identify trends, with the goal of creating a model to predict or optimize wellbore design for improved performance.
- Analyze Minifrac and Diagnostic Fracture Injection Test (DFIT) data.
- Utilize internal and external software systems such as AccuMap, ArcGIS, geoSCOUT, Petrinex, Power BI, and others.
What we’re looking for in you:
- Currently enrolled in the second or third year of a Bachelor’s program in Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with handling large databases and data manipulation tools is preferred.
- Strong data analytics and computer programming skills, with experience in Python, R Studio, or similar tools is preferred.
- Familiarity with machine learning tools such as Power BI, Spotfire, and/or Tableau is preferred.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Additional Information:
- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
- Please include a cover letter / portfolio as part of your application.
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
- Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
- If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email
