We are looking for a Substation Design Engineer to support this company’s upcoming onshore wind projects in the UK. The company is a recognised European IPP, where the candidate will be responsible for managing and designing Grid and Primary substations for their UK onshore wind projects. The ideal candidate has the option to work on a hybrid schedule and will work in collaboration with the local technical team in Northwest England and the Company headquarters in Italy.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in electrical design, specification, and application of transmission voltage substations or onshore wind projects in the UK.
  • Proficiency in creating single line diagrams using 2D AutoCAD.
  • Ability to technically assess and solve issues, with a thorough understanding of the technical requirements for the design, planning, operation, and development of the transmission network.
  • In-depth knowledge of National Grid, British and European Standards, with experience in writing technical specifications, guidance notes, and work instructions for plant, equipment, or substation design.
  • Experience in the design, manufacturing, testing, installation, or maintenance of transmission voltage plant and equipment is advantageous.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive suite of design drawings for Grid and Primary substations.
  • Prepare technical specifications and associated electrical designs for new substation projects ranging from 11kV to 132kV.
  • Produce feasibility reports, cost estimates, layouts, general arrangements (GAs), and plant specifications including transformers and switchgear.
  • Review designs from suppliers and clients to ensure technical compliance with current legislation and policies.
  • Ensure design deliverables meet contract requirements and client specifications.
  • Serve as the CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer for HV and EHV projects.
  • Identify, communicate, and manage Health and Safety risks and hazards within the project team.
  • Attend site meetings to support design or requirement changes during project construction.
  • Align project design works with program schedules, quality standards, and margin objectives.
  • Foster and develop relationships with both external and internal clients.
  • Write, maintain, and own technical specifications and guidance notes for substation design, including FACTS/HVDC systems, Transmission network interfaces, LV and MV systems, auxiliary systems, and substation earthing systems. Update existing specifications based on project lessons and technological developments.
  • As part of the Technical Authority, review test plans to ensure selected technology and equipment are adequately tested, validated, and review proposed suppliers for suitability on the transmission network.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice on new plant installations and support Operations with equipment capability assessments or fault investigations.
