Description:
The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) is a not-for-profit registered charitable organization that has been actively serving newcomers and low-income Calgarians since 1988. TIES’ primary goal is to provide immigrants and economically disadvantaged individuals with a solid foothold in Canada and afford them the opportunities to feel belonging in their new community
Purpose
Reporting to the Manager of Drop-In ESL and Volunteer Programs, Open Doors SELT Classes for Ukrainian Evacuees Substitute Coordinator/Instructor is a strong people person and is responsible for the coordination and administration of all aspects of the Open Doors SELT Classes for Ukrainian Evacuees. The Substitute Coordinator/Instructor is responsible for the daily operations of classes including students’ recruitment, maintaining students’ records, lesson planning and teaching. The Substitute Coordinator/Instructor will also play a vital role in overseeing operational needs of the program, administering surveys, collecting and compiling data.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Manager of the Drop-in ESL and Volunteer Programs, teach and coordinate the daily operations of the Open Doors SELT Classes for Ukrainian Evacuees, and delivery the activities in accordance with the objectives and/or outcomes of the programs to achieve overall success
- Recruit, orient and place students into appropriate program classes based on their benchmarks
- Maintain up-to-date records of students’ attendance, schedule, and program’s evaluation
- Collect data and program’s statistics for reporting and conduct regular student surveys
- Address students’ concerns and direct them to appropriate resources
- Conduct students’ needs assessment, plan lessons and activities aligned with the curriculum of the program
- Teach program classes
Assist with the promotion of the programs externally and internally
Other Responsibilities:
Perform other job-related duties of the Open Doors SELT Classes for Ukrainian Evacuees Coordinator/Instructor as requested by the Supervisor

- Knowledge of ESL teaching methodology
- Excellent language teaching and curriculum development skills and the ability to plan lessons at various English levels
- Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and using Google Drive for scheduling and forms

Education and Experience
The successful candidate will ideally possess:
- A bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or social services
- CELTA or TESL certificate or equivalent qualification and experience
- At least 2 years of experience teaching ESL
- Experience in ESL curriculum development is required
- A minimum of 6 months of program coordination experience
- A background in adult education, knowledge of Ukrainian and Russian would be an asset
