The Alberta Securities Commission is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province’s securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada’s capital markets.
The Market Regulation division oversees the equities and derivatives marketplaces, registrants (dealers, advisers, and investment fund managers), and industry self-regulatory organizations (SROs). With a dynamic team of investment and financial professionals, we are involved in leading-edge projects aimed at balancing effective regulation with our stakeholders’ need for innovation and efficient capital markets.
The opportunity:
We are looking to add to a Summer Law Student who will work in the legal team as a part of the Market Regulation division at the ASC.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the development of legal policy in relation to registrants, marketplaces, derivatives, clearing agencies, trade repositories and self regulatory organizations;
  • Assisting with providing legal advice and recommendations with respect to matters involving emerging developments, registration, and compliance matters;
  • Assisting ASC employees responsible for the oversight of registrants, marketplaces, derivatives, clearing agencies, trade repositories and self regulatory organizations;
  • Researching novel areas of securities and derivatives and preparing well-written and detailed memoranda summarizing key legal issues.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Be enrolled in a JD program;
  • Have an interest in administrative, regulatory or securities law;
  • Have general work experience in an environment where professionalism, confidentiality, problem solving and flexibility are required;
  • Demonstrate strong research and writing skills;
  • Be detail-oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills and a customer-focused attitude;
  • Have a desire to learn, develop, and take on new challenges;
  • Have an interest to make an impactful contribution towards the integration of technology and technology driven entities in Alberta’s capital markets.
