The Ready for Rec camp provides an opportunity for children and youth who require additional supports to be in a camp environment with less children and more staff.
Ready for Rec is hiring Summer Inclusion Coordinators for Summer 2025 for programs across the municipality! The Ready for Rec program focuses on recreation activities that promote fundamental movement skills, creative thinking, and recreation experience for children and youth with disabilities. This position will develop interesting and creative program opportunities and offer supports for persons with disabilities in programs (i.e. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, administering medication, etc.) Other responsibilities include: supervising, motivating, and evaluating recreation programs and services; scheduling, supervising, motivating and evaluating Summer Specialized Inclusion Staff; managing risk, ensuring participant safety; inventories, distributes and collects equipment and supplies; handling administrative duties, networking with community groups and organizations; organizing outings, submitting regular reports, tracking statistics; maintaining a budget and organizing staff meetings.
One position is designated for the Ready for Rec Youth Program (youth aged 13-18) and the remainder will be working in a children camp (5-12)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum enrolment in and undergraduate university degree or college diploma in a relevant field of study such as Therapeutic recreation, Child and Youth Studies, Psychology, Education Social Work, School of Communication. Disorders, Kinesiology- and/or equivalent level of training working with children and youth with a disability.
- Minimum 2-3 years related experience working with individuals of various ages and disabilities.
- Experience mentoring and/or coaching of staff and volunteer an asset.
- Previous training and/or experience in implementing behavioural management strategies.
- Previous Training and/or experience providing personal care.
- Valid certification in CPR/First Aid (CSA Basic) and NVCI (can be provided by employer)
- Valid Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

SALARY: Non-Union; $23.20 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
WORK LOCATION: Various Community Recreation Centres in HRM

Responsibilities:
- Assist Inclusion and Accessibility Specialist in establishing program capacity based on approved program resources
- Complete in-take interviews with participants and their families/guardians and liaises with families, caregivers and health professionals throughout the program.
- Develop and implements individualized plans to support inclusive participation when necessary (ie: picture boards, social stories, PECs program, transition schedules and behaviour modification strategies)
- Coaches and models’ positive strategies with all staff to support the successful delivery of programming for children and youth with Autism/ASD, behavioural challenges and cognitive disabilities.
- Ensures the provision of therapeutic intervention during times of crisis utilizing appropriate crisis prevention intervention and/or therapeutic intervention techniques.
- Ensure that all strategies, which are implemented, are compatible with all HRM programs/guidelines.
