About the Opportunity:
The Assistant Agronomist plays a key role in the farm operations team as a crop maintenance support role to growing season. They will assist with preparing and maintaining test plots, completing plot studies and analysis, and assisting growers to ensure crop maintenance and improvement and increasing agronomic knowledge base of growers resulting in success in crop yields.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities for plots and nurseries including:

o Land preparation
o Staking the boundaries of the plots and nurseries
o Seeding, some of which is hand planting
o Hand weeding
o Plant selection for culling / plant selection keeping as seed stock
o Hand rogueing daily to remove undesirable plants for at least 6 weeks and then every second day till harvest.
o Documenting all rogueing and selections for seed stock and for culling
o Hand harvesting the nurseries,
o Assistance in harvesting and post harvest seed storage.
o Operating small tractor

o Operating rototiller

  • Agronomy responsibilities Including:

o Supervised field tour to scout fields, perform yield estimates

o Scouting/inspecting other pedigree fields along with Seed Production Manager

  • Other duties as assigned by the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Science- Agriculture or similar related program
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills,
  • Strong writing, communication, facilitation skills.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Valid Class 3 License is an asset
  • Own vehicle

Working Conditions:

  • Travel required
  • Attending farm/ crop fields
  • Physically work land at test plots - planting tilling, weeding, shoveling
  • Standing walking for long periods
  • Interacts with suppliers, team members and management
  • Computer usage
