ABOUT US
As Canada’s only provincial museum dedicated to the story of work and workers, the Museum of Industry offers the largest galleries of exhibits in Atlantic Canada. As we tell the stories of how Nova Scotia changed as a result of industrial work, we specialize in hands-on fun for families. In our exhibits, you can find everything from one of the oldest steam locomotives in the world, to a climb-on colorful Kid’s train. Visitor experiences also include special exhibits, programs, events and school trips.
ABOUT OUR OPPORTUNITY
Our opportunity with the Museum of Industry is a perfect fit for someone who is seeking hands-on experience with museum collections. Our collection showcases Nova Scotia’s industrial history.
Over a 16-week term the employee will enter artifact records, examine and catalog artifacts, occasionally completing research and consultation to identify and better understand the artifacts. Hands-on training will be provided in cataloguing and data entry.
The successful candidate will be a student in a relevant field such as museum studies, history (preferably Canadian), material history or a related field. Experience working with artifact collections and/or working within a museum or heritage institution setting is an asset. Computer skills are necessary; museum database experience is preferred. Demonstrated communication and organizational skills are required. The ability to take direction and work on task is necessary. Fluency in English is required. Some of our events may take place during the evening and weekends. The candidate must be flexible when it comes to their schedule. Hours will total 70 hours bi-weekly. Weekend shifts may be required, and this position may include work on summer statutory holidays, as events or museum programs dictate.
The Museum of Industry is a part of the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. Recruitment and selection are carried out with the Public Service Commission. Recruitment will follow the Employment Equity Policy of the Province of Nova Scotia in support of a diverse workforce where applicants from underrepresented groups are invited to self-identify on their application.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The candidate must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution, having preferably completed at least two years of study. Must be registered in the Young Canada Works (YCW) on-line candidate inventory (https://young-canada-works.canada.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the program.
Students enrolled in museum studies, history (preferably Canadian), material history and other related fields are preferable.
