Reporting to the General Supervisor, Waste Collection, the Supervisor of Communal Collections and Waste Drop-Off Services contributes to the City Operations vision by performing a dual-faceted role.
Firstly, as a member of the Section Extended Leadership Team and operating within a collective leadership accountability, the role is focused on creating the conditions for success of the strategy, priorities, and direction of the section and unit. Secondly, the Supervisor is accountable for implementing the human, social, technical, and operational systems required to carry out the work of the functional area on a day-to-day basis.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of and monitor work plans for timeliness, quantity, quality, productivity, unit costing, safety, and accomplishments
  • Proven planning and organizational skills to manage service delivery, including the ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience managing and working with external contractors
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including writing and interpreting reports, presentation/public speaking skills, and the ability to interact well with a diverse group of leaders, colleagues, staff, and citizens
  • Human resource management skills, including recruitment, coaching, performance development and management, and conflict resolution

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge, training and/or education in Business, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Experience in a leadership and supervisory role within a large, complex unionized organization, demonstrating knowledge in waste management operations, including experience managing contracts and overseeing service delivery and contract managemen

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a team of Waste Supervisors, and staff in the delivery of Apartment & Condo, Big Bin, Community Recycling Depot, and Assisted Waste Collection services for the City
  • Lead and support staff in developing plans to improve communication, problem-solving, and teamwork
  • Ensure staff are empowered, and are well equipped to perform their duties
  • Develop and independently implement staff performance development and management plans
  • Maintaining and building union relationships, understanding the collective bargaining agreements which includes consultation with the union
  • Ensuring that all City and OH&S safety and ENVISO standards and guidelines are implemented and adhered to
  • Management of contracts for Apartment & Condo Collection and ensuring contracts are enacted as intended and service delivery standards and best practices are implemented
  • Implement consistent application of service delivery standards and best practices
  • Oversee the daily use of labour, equipment, and materials to deliver services efficiently
  • Plan, execute, monitor, control and report on the effective and efficient use of resources
  • Contribute to the design and improvement of processes for service delivery

Qualifications:
