Description:
The Supervisor, Surface Mine Operations is responsible for the safe and efficient functioning of the open pit coal mine, thereby ensuring that established production targets are met or exceeded.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Minimum grade 12 is required. Post-secondary coursework/training in processing is beneficial.
- AMSA Supervisor Education Course completion or eligible to take the course.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in open pit, hard rock coal mining operations is required including recent experience (2-5 years) in supervisory role.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of open pit operations.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and related legislation.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical and improvement methods.
- Demonstrated stress and time management competencies, crucial for managing the demands of a dynamic and sometimes high-pressure work environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent supervisory and motivating skills.
- Understanding of scheduling and payroll guidelines, Occupational Safety and Health regulations and disciplinary procedures in a union environment.
- Proficiency with all Microsoft suite programs, alongside the capacity to quickly adapt to computer software programs necessary for managing employee administrative tasks such as timecards, vacation requests, and leaves.
- Previous experience working with a unionized workforce an asset
- ability to build strong relationships and foster a culture of safety, integrity, and teamwork, essential for maintaining a positive and productive work environment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Lift up to 10 kg.
- Valid driver’s license and experience driving 4x4 vehicle.

Responsibilities:
ACCOUNTABILITY
This position reports directly to the General Foreman Mine Operations and directly supervises equipment operators.
RESPONSIBILITIES & PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
- Strategically allocate crew and operators to achieve production targets in a safe and cost-effective manner.
- Lead and conduct daily morning meetings to discuss priorities, safety topics, and operational updates, ensuring a cohesive and informed workforce
- Manage attendance, ensuring accurate time and payroll recordkeeping.
- Complete shift reports and incident reports as required
- Dynamically adjust operations in response to shifting conditions throughout each shift.
- Cultivate a strong culture of safety by actively involving the team in safety programs and ensuring compliance with all policies and regulations.
- Resolve, document, and escalate personnel issues as appropriate, maintaining a productive and respectful work environment.
- Monitor, adhere to, and apply company safety procedures using all of the materials required to safely and efficiently conduct work.
- Identify training needs and development of the crew to ensure that appropriate training programs are developed to improve employee skills and operations effectiveness.
- Lead thorough investigations into operational incidents, focusing on root causes and preventive measures.
- Conduct performance reviews and ongoing coaching with employees.
- Knowledge and experience in environmental management practices, especially in spill avoidance, containment, and reporting, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship.
- Other duties and tasks as assigned.
