JOB SUMMARY

Guided by a vision to provide a safe, efficient, effective transportation system that serves residents, businesses and visitors in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable manner, the Transportation Services Division of the City of Toronto plans, constructs and manages the transportation infrastructure within the public right-of-way, including the public realm, sidewalks and roads. As a Traffic Engineering Supervisor within the Traffic Management Section, you’ll play a key leadership role in the Division’s ability to deliver on its service commitments.
Accountable, adaptable and innovative, able to handle day-to-day challenges and employee relations issues, you’ll assume responsibility for all aspects of the staff supervision function. This will include recruitment, selection and hiring, scheduling and assigning work, coaching and mentoring, determining training and development needs, managing performance, and determining or recommending disciplinary action in accordance with collective agreements, policies and practices.
Demonstrating your leadership, teamwork and organizational capabilities, you’ll administer and coordinate investigations by staff of complaints or requests regarding road safety, pedestrians, cycling, school zones, congestion, transit operations, inappropriate operating practices, parking, traffic control signals, and other traffic-related concerns.
We’ll rely on you to ensure that staff work in a safe manner, utilizing all required health and safety equipment and protective devices, as well as following all measures and procedures as required by policies and guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its Regulations. Leading by example, you’ll create an environment conducive to the effective, efficient performance of high- quality traffic investigations, with a focus on customer service.
Your research and analytical skills, with knowledge in statistical and other analysis relating to traffic and/or transportation matters, will prove invaluable in developing, organizing and implementing traffic studies. You’ll research, compile and analyze data and prepare, or direct the preparation of, reports to elected officials, members of the public, standing committees and City Council, assessing impacts and recommending corrective measures where necessary.
A strong communicator with a customer focus, you’ll liaise with elected and government officials, agencies, the public, resident and business associations, etc., on transportation issues, represent the Division in meetings and on committees, and prepare, or provide input into the preparation of, by-laws and regulations, as well as supervise their implementation. You’ll also be expected to coordinate the installation of, and/or modification to, traffic control devices and develop initiatives directed at improving traffic operations and enhancing public safety.
