As Moog strategically increases the quantity of parts it purchases from external supply chain partners, there is a need for Manufacturing Engineers to support the development, onboarding, and growth of suppliers. The goal is to ensure stable and capable manufacturing processes are in place to allow delivery of product at customer demand rate.
Manufacturing Engineers are involved at all stages of the product lifecycle including influencing design at concept stage, supplier assessment and selection, identifying key process characteristics, manufacturing/ assembly process and controls development, process capability analysis and management of change.
Manufacturing Engineers play a critical role in ensuring product integrity as parts are transferred to suppliers and work as part of a cross functional team to assess and mitigate technical risk.
Main responsibilities of the role:
Provide technical support to suppliers in the evaluation and improvement of manufacturing processes.
Support a cross functional supplier management team, acting as the subject matter expert and focal point for manufacturing capability issues.
Understand part design intent and help suppliers understand requirements flow down and producibility risk, facilitating DfX activity as and when required.
Lead problem solving activities using a range of lean sigma tools.
Assess manufacturing capability as part of new supplier selection or existing supplier gap analysis activity.
Communicate across engineering, commodity, and quality teams on supplier Manufacturing Engineering issues.
Special Circumstances
The successful candidate will have a background working in a Manufacturing Engineering role, ideally with experience of both internal manufacturing and manufacturing in a supply chain environment. The successful candidate will have a broad experience of manufacturing methods that allows them to quickly establish technical credibility. Specialisms in any of the following areas will also be considered/ welcomed; all forms of milling, turning, grinding, assembly and special processes and component family specialisms such as gears/ splined parts, cylinders, pistons, manifolds, housings, valves, pumps, motors.
Desirable Qualifications
Degree in a relevant discipline (engineering / manufacturing)
Minimum of 8 years’ experience in a Manufacturing Engineering role
Expert in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
Strong data driven decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Accomplished in manufacturing capability assessment.
Experience of core defect prevention tools (PFMEA, control plan, MSA, capability analysis, error proofing etc) highly advantageous
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work in cross functional teams to tight deadlines and often under pressure.
Experience of new product introduction or
Knowledge of aerospace industry standards and regulations, particularly AS13000 series, AS9102, AS9103 and AS9145 advantageous but not necessary
Formal continuous improvement qualification (lean sigma green or black belt) advantageous but not necessary
Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of Moog and external organizations both written and oral
High degree of numeracy and knowledge of statistical techniques is desirable.
Flexible and prepared to travel, including within the UK & Europe, on a frequent basis
