JOB SUMMARY
The Surface Flotilla (SURFLOT) is responsible for the operation, force generation and in-service capability management of all warships in the Royal Navy. It delivers available, safe and environmentally sound surface platforms to meet Navy Command and Defence Plan directed outputs, supporting operations around the globe. The Commander of the Surface Flotilla (COMSURFLOT), as the Operating Duty Holder, is accountable for Health Safety and Environmental Protection (HSEP) across all ships, boats and diving units within the command. The governance of HSEP is managed by the Operating Safety Group (OSG), which provides policy, specialist HSEP advice and assurance across SURFLOT. The OSG is based in SURFLOT Headquarters in Portsmouth Dockyard.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Operating Safety Group Environmental Protection Manager position provides environmental protection policy, processes and specialist advice to the Operating Duty Holders. They collate assurance that the Ships, Boats and Diving Units are being operated in a manner that achieves environmentally sound outcomes and meets the requirements of the Defence Maritime Regulations, and UK and International Law.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Optimising the Environmental Protection policy and processes across SURFLOT to ensure efficient and effective delivery of COMSURFLOT’s responsibilities.
- Providing advice and guidance that supports Environmental Protection in SURFLOT and enables activity by the provision of administrative support and information management.
- Supporting the activity of the OSG in providing advice, guidance and leadership for environmental protection related issues.
- Providing advice, guidance and training on SURFLOT Environmental Protection policy and process to SURFLOT staff.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
