Description:

Surgeons work with limited equipment, facilities, and human resources, using strong judgement, professional skills, and extensive experience to treat various ailments. Those in this position must have the ability and skills to independently perform medical treatment and postoperative care in line with MSF protocols.
Surgeons handle a wide range of cases, including puncture wounds and cuts from knives and large sickles, road accidents, gunshot wounds, abdominal gastrointestinal surgery, lung surgery, and cardiovascular surgery. Fractures are also handled by surgeons in areas where there is no orthopaedic surgeon, and in areas where there is no obstetrician/gynecologist, they work with midwives to perform caesarean sections.
They also provide guidance and training for locally hired staff.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Compliance with all of the essential requirements for all potential candidates
  • Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (or equivalent)
  • At least two years clinical experience as a consultant
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • General surgery
  • Orthopedic and trauma surgery
  • Reconstructive or plastic surgery
  • Performed at least five caesarean sections during the past two years. If all other criteria are met except for five caesarean sections your application may be validated subject to being able to perform caesarean sections with ob-gyn colleagues prior to final acceptance to the pool or by being enrolled and successfully completing an MSF residency training to increase capacity in obstetric surgery
  • Available for assignment for a minimum period between six to eight weeks, but would prefer four months or longer
  • Current practising certificate and must display no recent gap in clinical experience greater than two years
  • Willingness to abide by Médecins Sans Frontières medical protocols
