POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Surgical Technician at Associated Retina Consultants, you will work closely with our ophthalmic surgeons to provide safe and effective surgical care to our patients. You will be responsible for preparing the operating room, assisting during surgical procedures, and ensuring that all necessary equipment is sterile and functioning properly. In addition, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate surgical records and assisting in the training of new surgical staff members. The Surgical Technician will work in the back office when there are no surgeries. The position requires traveling to other surgical centers and working on after-hours surgeries.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a surgical technology program and certification in surgical specialty.
  • Current BCLS certification is mandatory.
  • At least one year of related work experience in the operating room.
  • Membership in surgical local, state, and national societies is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of sterile technique and proper handling of instruments, supplies, and tissue specimens.
  • Familiarity with literature and new developments in the field related to the operating room.
  • Understanding of different operative procedures and instruments used for each type of operation.
  • Knowledge of safe and correct positioning of patients for various procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to various personalities and work cooperatively with all members of the operating team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to quickly establish rapport with patients and team members.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Average visual and auditory acuity required; must be able to use visually and auditory orientated medical equipment.
  • Average hand dexterity required; must be able to adequately perform hand movements and coordination with medical supplies.
  • Must be able to maneuver upper body, adequately lift 1-15 lbs. on a regular basis, and perform physical tasks such as pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, and reaching up to 66% of the time.
  • May be exposed to hazards such as blood borne pathogens, communicable diseases, chemicals, steam, pressurized cylinders, sharp objects, and moving parts of equipment.
  • Safety equipment provided includes gloves, glasses, protective gowns, hair restraints, masks/shoe covers, fire extinguisher, sharps containers, and bio-hazard disposal.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides a safe environment for patients, intervening in problem situations and reporting information to the supervisor.

  • Handles patient specimens per procedure and provides necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for various operative procedures.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment, including isolating dirty or contaminated instruments and supplies to minimize the spread of infection.
  • Checks the operating room for cleanliness and orderliness and notes general aspects of all cases for the day.
  • Assists with setting up the sterile operating field and observes strict aseptic technique throughout the entire procedure.
  • Helps clean the room following a procedure, cares for instruments, supplies, and equipment used in the sterile field, and assists with restocking the room at completion of the assignment.
