POSITION SUMMARY

Centennial College is dedicated to advancing an ambitious vision and objectives for sustainability and a low carbon economy. These aspirations touch on most aspects of the College’s operational and educational activities.
Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability, the Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for stewarding the College’s commitments to sustainability, from the operations perspective, and also integrating engagement activities and programs where possible. This will be done to advance the College’s environmental and sustainability agenda to ensure that sustainable development is achieved in accordance with the objectives and targets set out in the College’s Strategic Plan.
The first aspect of this responsibility is the development and implementation of dedicated plans and initiatives such as the Decarbonization Strategy and Sustainability Development Plan. The second aspect is to embed sustainability principles and practices into other plans and strategies of the College, to recommend coherent policies and an integrated management approach. The Sustainability Coordinator will monitor provincial and federal policy and funding programs and will assist with the preparation of funding proposals which advance the sustainability and energy vision and objectives for the College.
The Sustainability Coordinator will facilitate collaboration and engagement across the College to advance specific themes such as energy management, green buildings and infrastructure, renewable energy, waste diversion, water conservation, biodiversity of grounds, sustainable purchasing practices within operations, and other college community engagement initiatives. Communication efforts will be a key focus, and this position will serve as a bridge within the organization, between departments, students, staff, the broader community. The Sustainability Coordinator will also engage with peers from other colleges and universities to learn about and advance best practices from other jurisdictions.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum three (3) year diploma/degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Resources, Environmental Studies, Earth/Physical Sciences, Facilities Management, Sustainability, Sustainable Business, Engineering or other relevant field.
  • Minimum of minimum of 3 years of sustainability/environment sector experience.
  • One or more of the following designations are preferred: Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED® Accredited Professional, Project Management Professional (PMP), Zero Waste Business Associate, waste audit certification, and/or Environmental Professional (EP).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability concepts, issues and best practices (preferably within the context of a post-secondary educational institution.
  • Project management principles and methodologies and experience with capital, energy and sustainability projects.
  • Knowledge and experience in business case development, financial control and analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate outcomes and recommend actions.
  • Organizational skills: time management, self-motivation, project management, priority setting.
  • Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, Power Point, data base.
  • Superior oral, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills to ensure information is communicated accurately and clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, guide and gain consensus with diverse stakeholders and/or teams.
  • Recruiting and coordinating volunteers.
  • Developing and coordinating community events
  • Developing partnerships with public and NGO’s
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability assessment in academic context, including AASHE STARS, or similar reporting tools.
