We are seeking an experienced and passionate Sustainability Manager to join our team at HMP Altcourse. This is your opportunity to drive innovation, implement impactful strategies, and play a pivotal role in achieving our ambitious environmental goals.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR :

We’re seeking a proactive and innovative leader with the following qualifications and skills:

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification by experience.
  • Professional membership (e.g., IEMA, CIWM, CIBSE, or Energy Institute).
  • In-depth understanding of sustainability legislation and compliance requirements (e.g., Waste Regulations, Net Zero, and ISO 14001).
  • Proven experience in Net Zero carbon roadmaps, energy management, and biodiversity plans.
  • Familiarity with BREEAM accreditation, sustainable travel plans, and low-carbon energy technologies.
  • Strong communication, influencing, and stakeholder relationship skills.
  • Competency in MS 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Ability to lead innovation, manage competing priorities, and work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE :

  • CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant or Assessor.
  • LEED or BREEAM accreditation.
  • IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications.
  • Previous experience in facilities management or engineering in an operational environment.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

As Sustainability Manager, you will oversee all sustainability-related initiatives, ensuring compliance with Government policies such as the Greening Government Commitments and supporting the journey to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions. From managing Carbon Reduction Plans and energy decarbonisation strategies to leading biodiversity enhancements and waste reduction efforts, this role offers a dynamic blend of strategy, innovation, and hands-on impact.

You will work closely with the Sodexo Contract Senior Management Team and the Authority, acting as the go-to expert for sustainability best practices, legal compliance, and emerging trends. In this role, you will:

  • Lead the development and delivery of the Sustainability Plan for HMP Altcourse.
  • Drive resource efficiency by minimizing travel, reducing energy and water consumption, and meeting recycling targets.
  • Oversee compliance with ISO 14001 and BREEAM accreditation, ensuring environmental excellence.
  • Monitor, report, and communicate sustainability progress, supporting the entire site team to align with the latest Government and environmental objectives.
  • Deliver training and promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

This position offers the chance to collaborate with industry experts, deliver high-impact sustainability strategies, and represent Sodexo in client meetings as a passionate advocate for environmental progress.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and Implement Sustainability Plans in line with Government policies, including the Clean Growth Strategy and Net Zero goals.
  • Maintain a credible Carbon Reduction Plan and oversee energy decarbonisation efforts.
  • Drive waste prevention strategies and meet contractual recycling targets.
  • Support biodiversity initiatives and create climate change adaptation strategies aligned with MoJ’s 2024 Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.
  • Collaborate with Sodexo subject matter experts and external partners to deliver cutting-edge sustainability solutions.
  • Monitor, report, and provide recommendations on sustainability progress, ensuring on-time delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Deliver training and develop action plans to engage teams and foster behavioural change.
